when some one asks if their baby is cute and it really isn't.. what do you say?
also, why do people see babies and instantly say, oh, they're so cute!!
is this true? do people generally think babies are cute or is it just the thing to say because it's a baby?

i hate the question. i think it's a load of shiit. don't ask me if your baby is cute, i'll tell you if i think it is. i don't want to lie to you, and i wont'.. but please don't ask me.
once some one insisted that their baby was adorable and i just wanted to say no.. but i felt horrible and said they are cute anyway..
i generally don't think new babies are cute until they aren't all swollen and don't look like they just got beat up.
i think i'm heartless.
but seriously.. i wonder why this is the first thing people say...
I try to pick something about the baby that's kinda cute, or something to comment on.
Like, look at his cheeks!
I think most babies are cute, but not all. I don't lie, but I don't say they're not cute. Like emyinpink said, point out something cute or say something vague. "Look at his cheeks!," sounds like a compliment, but isn't necessarily.
I don't think I've ever had someone ask me if I thought their kids was cute, except maybe rhetorically, not looking for me to agree. But, I have had people say isn't so and so's kid soooo cute, when I don't agree.

Back to op....I do generally think babies are cute and when I see them, that is usually the first thing I say..."oh my gosh, she/he's sooo stinking cute!" .....I probably just say nothing if I don't think it's cute.....I can't remember seeing an ugly baby. Except maybe for the babies that the bump baby maker made me. haha.

Perhaps this is my non-maternal side talking, but I don't think that most babies are cute. IMO they look like little, wrinkly old people till they're at least 6 or 9 months old.

If i don't think so i say, "Ohmygosh, of course!" But if i think so, it would be a genuine, "S/he is a seriously cute baby. [notably cute feature]."

My mom has a good response: "That's some baby!"
Or I just say, "What a wonderful baby!" That way you're complimenting, but not being specific.

lol at "that's some baby!" i'd DIE if you guys say that about my baby! lol.
Ditto. If they ask,I try to find SOMETHING cute about the kid. Otherwise, if they don't ask but I see them and think their baby is not-cute, I just say "Congrats!"
