Supremely Stupid Movie Question

On ads for movies they sometimes say "only in theaters".

I doubt these movies won't be sold on DVD/Blu-Ray.  Those are huge money makers.

So why do they say that?

I told you this question was supremely stupid.  But it has always perplexed me.

Re: Supremely Stupid Movie Question

  • They just means that it is only available in theaters on that date. As in, this is not going straight to DVD. Not stupid. Lots of people don't get it.
  • Really?  That's interesting.

It's probably not even necessary to say that since Bring It On VII: Oh No She Di-in't is never going to have TV ads.

  • I think with streaming movies these days, it's also a way to let people know that if they see the movie online it isn't legit.  There are some movies that *do* have a limited time streamed released at the same time it's in theaters, but it's pretty rare (and expensive!).  The only movie I can think of like that off the top of my head was the Freakonomics movie.  You could rent it off of Zune for a limited time while it was also in a limited release to some theaters.
