I'm starting to get things washed before baby comes. Things like blankets, towels, washcloths, etc are done already. I'm not planning on washing every piece of clothing we have for her because I don't want to wash too much before I see how big she is and what she's comfy in, etc.
But I'm having a hard time figuring out how much NB size stuff to wash. At my u/s this past week, they estimated her around 6lbs 2oz already (even though I know that can be way off) which puts her to be around an 8lb newborn (and my gut tells me she'll be around 8lbs).
The NB size stuff all basically says up to 8lbs - just looking at it I have a hard time believing that even if she is 8lbs or just over, that she won't fit into it for at least a couple of weeks. What was your experience? Is it safe to wash a handful of sleepers and onesies that are NB? I guess worst case is I wash it, she doesn't fit into it, and I donate it since I can't return it, right?

Re: Moms - washing baby clothes?
Sarina still fits in some newborn outfits. The Carters jumpers without feet she outgrew but the sleepers with feet still fit for the most part (I don't know how that is possible). Two piece NB outfits still fit as well-- she fits into 0-3s as well but I can still squeeze her into the NB outfits if I want. I'm estimating her around 9lbs right now but she's long and skinny.
I think it's safe to assume newborn size for at least the first few weeks... even if she's 8lbs at birth. I can't remember but I think it was estimated at 6lb 3oz at my 34 week appt and she was 6lb 15 oz at birth.
I only washed NB at first and then when washed 0-3 a few weeks after her birth. If she's bigger then someone can always bring a 0-3 outfit to the hospital if you need it.
Even Lukey who was 8lbs 11oz and over 10lbs at his two week appointment wore newborn for a little while. It certainy depends on brand though. Gerber runs realllly small.
And, you can always save it for #2

Brynn was 8lb 4oz (like her boyfriend Brody) and was in newborn for almost 2 months. .... But this is also the girl who just started wearing 12 month clothing at 16 months so take what I say for a grain of salt.
It is a good plan not to wash everything because you never know how quickly (or slowly) baby will grow. I had a bunch of winter 18 month clothes that I ended up returning so I could get 12 month clothes for Brynn and I'm so glad I was able to do that.
Thanks ladies! I washed a few sleepers and some onesies - enough to get us through a couple of days, I'll just do more laundry if I need to once we get home from the hospital!
I can't believe I'm washing baby clothes.
Levi fit into newborn for a good 2 months if not more. His first month he wore preemie. He's a very slow gainer and now at almost 19 months is just starting to wear 18 month shirts and still 12 month pants.
He was 6lbs 15.5oz and 21.5" long.
