S/O food - recipes for desserts and/or bread?
As I mentioned in one of the Thanksgiving posts earlier this week, we're doing an early Thanksgiving dinner with my family next weekend. I've signed myself up to bring bread and a non-pumpkin dessert. I'm a decent baker, but don't want to spend all day cooking (esp. since my grandmother lives 2.5 hours away and we'll drive up on Saturday). Any particular recipe recommendations? Or - if not the actual recipes - suggestions of things to make? TIA!

martha stewart's apple pie with a cheddar crust is off the hook:

it's really easy if you have a food processor
as far as bread goes, i always look for an excuse to buy the pilsbury *frozen* biscuits. not the ones in the can. the frozen ones taste just like my great grandma's! (and without any of the effort...)
i have a sour cream chocolate chip cake recipe that is actually better if you make it the night before. i can find that if you're interested.

The No Knead Breads are great (there are so many recipes out there). I usually sub in a half to full cup of rye flour for a more rustic flavor. You do the mixing the day (or two) before and the morning of you just bake. The Five Minute a Day bread is a similar concept, but it's not worth making starter if you are not going to make it often.
My mom's apple cake (similar to this one on Smitten Kitchen) is so good. The recipe is the same, I just layer the apples and batter.

here you go. i've made this without the crumb topping and have drizzled with chocolate ganache or a vanilla glaze. it's always awesome.
fyi: if you wrap tightly in foil and freeze you could even do this a week ahead of time.
chocolate chip crumbcake
2 cups all-purpose flour1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup (8 tbsp) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
3 eggs
1 cup sour cream
2 cups mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
Topping:
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
2 tbsp softened unsalted butter
1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
-In small bowl, combine the flour, sugar and butter and mix well. Stir in the chocolate chips and spread on the BOTTOM of the pan.
-Preheat oven to 350*F. Grease 13''x9'' bundt pan. In small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside. In large bowl, combine butter, sugar and vanilla and cream well. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually add flour mixture alternately with sour cream. Fold in semi-sweet chips. Spread evenly into pan. Bake 45-50 minutes.
