Flammable

I think smoking while pregnant or around  your children is child abuse.

I know of a child with severe asthma who has already missed a ton of school. She is a smart girl, but it is tough for her when she's constantly sick. The kicker: the parents and her stuff always smells of smoke. Yup, that is helping her lungs. Also, she was a micropreemie so you know her lungs aren't great to start with. If you put poison in their food it is abuse -- but not in the air? Help me with this one. I cannot comprehend.

Re: Flammable

  • I completely agree with you.  Smoking in general makes no sense to me (you're going to pay for something that is going to harm you?), but then to expose your children is even more wrong on so many levels.

  • Totally agree. I'm also super-crazy about smoking in public areas and think smoking in public places not designated as smoking areas (like less than 10 feet from entrances) should qualify for assault or some kind of harm charges - the wimpy fines from tickets that are never enforced are not enough. I cannot protect myself or my kids, etc. from secondhand smoke that close to areas I have to walk through.

  • I hate smoking. My parents smoked on and off throughout my childhood, but always made sure to not smoke around us kids, it was always outside and when we weren't around. In college I tried cigarettes a few times but it was still gross. Now, I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke, or any smoke for that matter. I can't comprehend how people think its okay, especially with all the health risks, not only to themselves, but to others through secondhand smoke.

  • Ugh, I hate when kids come into school smelling like smoke, it makes me so mad!

  • Yeah, no flames here. I think smoking is rude and disgusting. Even if you're "smoking in your car" the person behind you gets it in their car if their window is open or fan/heat is on. It's pretty gross and far more popular here in NE than it was in VT.

  • Smoking is one of my biggest pet peeves and I judge people who smoke (which makes me sound awful). My father was a huge smoker (like 4 packs a day) up until the point the doctors said if he didn't quit he would die very quickly. He quit cold turkey when I was like 11. I completely agree with you Maria - those parents are abusing their child. When I walk by smoking areas or people smoking I hold my breath b/c the smell makes me sick.

This paragraph describes my H exactly from start to finish.  I make comments about how sad it is when I open a kid's backpack at school and the smoke smell just pours out of it, and he always says "Yeah, I was that kid."  Now, at 24, his lungs are royally fvcked and I'm convinced he has some sort of COPD because of it.  He has trouble running or doing strenuous things, is always coughing up phlegm, and is generally on the brink of pneumonia at any given moment.

So judge away, you get no side-eye from me.
