I'm fabric stupid and need help, por favor.

I want to make a DIY crib skirt using the Young House Love tutorial.

How many yards of fabric should I buy for this?

I know this will depend a bit on the measurement of my crib (I have the Ikea Gulliver if anyone just so happens to have one also and has done this by some chance) but I figure most all cribs will be around the same general size. I'm okay with overbuying by a bit as I can use the fabric in another project.

  • The crib is 53.5 x 29.5. They mention adding 3 inches to each length. You can probably get away with buying about 62 inches unless you plan a really deep skirt because you can cut it in half lengthwise, one long piece for front and 2 short pieces for sides (you'll need more if you want 4 sided).  Just be carefully if there is a pattern.

  • Thank you!

If there is a pattern, it'll affect my ability to just cut and piece? The fabric I have in mind does have a pattern.

    Thank you!

If there is a pattern, it'll affect my ability to just cut and piece? The fabric I have in mind does have a pattern.

It will depend on direction of the pattern (whether it runs the length of the fabric or across), and whether or not there is a repeat that needs to be matched.  The pattern repeat measurements vary from pattern to pattern, and that measurement may not coincide with the measurement you need, so you may need a bit extra yardage to allow for matching it up.

If you have a hard time visualizing it, it may help to make a paper pattern of the finished size and take it with you to lay on the fabric to see where you will be piecing.  The people who work at the store might help you, but it really depends on the store, as to how helpful they will be.

  • Sometimes the pattern goes from selvage to selvage (usually around 44" if quilting fabric, maybe longer for home dec) so you would have to piece it together for the front piece. If the pattern runs along the selvage it won't be an issue. Also centering it, like pp mentioned.

  • Thanks for your help ladies. I will keep the pattern issue in mind when I go to the fabric store tomorrow. I was hoping to use a chevron fabric for the crib skirt but I'm realizing that will be challenging. I'll just use the chevron fabric I'm obsessed with for the curtains. :)
