Re: Adults are just like kids

  • That's a really neat foundation to have. I'm glad your school stepped it up, carrot or not ;) It's just a fundamental principle of human psychology.

Our principal did something similar: if we donated 12 cans to the Thanksgiving food drive being done by a church through the school, we could wear jeans from Nov. 1-Dec.1(because our central office has been getting super invasive about the dress codes and rewards our principals could give us). She upped it even more by saying we could wear jeans until Christmas break (8 more school days) if we took an ornament from the giving tree at work and got the toy/outfit for the kid. DH and I were already sponsoring an entire family, so I got a pass there :)

  • Frequently in meetings at school I suggest a behavior plan with some sort of reward. Whenever I get the push back that they should just do the work/behave etc without reward I get annoyed. I usually point out that we are all rewarded for doing our job....on pay day. Kids and adults are very similar. Dangle a reward and frequently productivity will increase.

You're right- when the incentives are used well, they are very effective- especially for those kids with needs.  It's funny to observe those kiddos with behavior issues and see what truly motivates them.  One of mine last year wanted nothing to do with trinkets, computer time, etc. but would do anything to have access to my good behavior tickets- for the OTHER kids!  He loved to notice when the other kids were doing x, y, or z well and wanted to be the one to hand-deliver a ticket/sticker to them.  It helped the other kiddos to warm up to him too.

I do think they are overused/misused sometimes and lose meaning for the kids.  I use a lot of whole-class incentive programs over the course of a year because they are so motivating and help the kids work as a team.  I just started a Mystery Motivator for coming to the rug immediately when called and the kids are so pumped!

It is a really neat foundation.  Our campus got $30K in materials this year from the foundation.  Teachers that didn't have grants funded got up to $250 of their wishlist funded automatically.  Funding day is so exciting- they send the foundation board members into the classrooms with one of those giant checks.  You'll just randomly hear a scream from down the hall and start straining to hear who won what.  :)

And... jeans days are like GOLD BRICKS, man.  I'd do just about anything for them!
