Can you rec some good areas for rentals? We're not sure if we'll end up there or Anne Arundel as it depends on if I find a new job b/w now and March. I know where we'd move if it turns out to be Anne Arundel, but I'm not familiar with SS that much.
But some things to consider:
(1) safe area to walk the dog
(2) potential yard for the dog
(3) potential for metro, although it doesn't need to be walking distance
(3) not too far from 95, so SO can get to work in PG County/Beltsville area.
(4) Ok with an apartment, house, or TH.
(5) Under 2k a month
Is this impossible? Ha, ha.
Re: Who lives in Silver Spring?
Silver Spring is a really big area, so it kind of depends on where you're looking. It sounds like Wheaton/Forest Glen (north of the beltway) might be good for you. There are metro stops there, it's close to the beltway, and you could get a more affordable rental (possibly a house with a yard).
We also had a nice apartment in downtown Silver Spring (Falkland Chase), with a big dog run, which was a quick shot to the beltway but about 15 minutes to 95.

Off the top of my head, I'd look at the Woodmoor neighborhood, which is off of Colesville Road, north of downtown Silver Spring, but not too far away. It's just north of the Beltway, and Colesville Rd. is only a couple of exits away from I-95. It's a cute little neighborhood with lots of young families, most of the homes have yards, and I think you should be able to find a rental in your price range, although I haven't looked recently. It's not walking distance to a Metro, but it's not far from downtown silver spring and the Metro there (and there is plenty of parking at the SS Metro, or you could take a bus).
I'd also look at the Colesville neighborhood, which is farther north up Colesville Rd./Route 29. You'll be farther from the Metro and in a more suburban area, but still not far from I-95 and within your price range.
I'd try somewhere off Randolph Road... then you could shoot down Randolph to get to Beltsville. We're in Wheaton, which (depending on where you look) could meet a lot of your criteria.
PM me if you have any specific questions.
Thanks everyone. SO could always drop me off at the Metro, so I don't need it to be walking distance.
We're going to drive around this weekend, so I'll look at some of these areas.
Dumb question, but how safe is Wheaton? I had a friend who lived there 6 years ago and she told me stay far away...
Depends on where you're at.... There are some safe neighborhoods, and some sketchy ones.
I agree with this.
I live in Wheaton in a SFH neighborhood and I feel very safe and comfortable there. That being said, I would be careful as I would anywhere.
You may be able to find this in parts of Kensington too... think parts near the Conn. Ave and University Ave. split, also parts that surround Wheaton Mall.
I live near the mall in a small SFH with yard and feel safe here - but that being said, I wouldn't walk around parts of Wheaton by myself at night.
We are in the Rock Creek Village/Gardens/Commons area. It's on the border with Chevy Chase. Lots of space to walk dogs, and it's about a mile from Silver Spring metro. I walk it every morning, I don't think it's too bad (good exercise). To find an opening, you have to keep an eye on Craigslist, but there's usually one every month if not every other month.
Near the Parkway Deli, the Rock Creek Sports Club and the Emerald Door Spa. I love it there. We'll probably stay there until we leave D.C.
Thanks all....we did a quick drive through the area & I dont think its for us....I cant imagine how congested Georgia Ave gets and it was so busy...even through Wheaton back through Colesville and going towards Ho Co.
we will see....but right now I am clinging to keeping closer to country/burbs...not so urban
