Seattle Hospitals

I have had the unfortunate luck of spending a lot of time in the Seattle 1st Hill area hospitals. DH and I were talking a walk outside Harbourview, were my Granny currently is at to be treated by a infectious disease specialist and neurologist, and we walked past both Swedish and Virgina Mason. So it got us talking, what is Virgina Mason known for? Most of the babies I know were born at Swedish and they are also well known for their work with the bloodless surgery program. And I've heard Harbourview has most of the specialists. What about Virgina? We were just curious and I thought you ladies might know.

Re: Seattle Hospitals

  • I honestly don't know. I was a patient there for most of my life and that was because it was pretty much the only clinic on the Island. I only ever went to the Seattle location when I had an abnormal pap and had to have a LEEP done. I really don't like the vibe of the clinic here anymore. I much prefer my OB who used to be at VM and now has her own practice and E's pedi who used to be there and is now at The Doctor's Clinic. I do know that they are advertised as being a sponsor and doctors of the Sounders so maybe they are more known for sports medicine.

  • Well, Harborview is the only Trauma I ranked hospital in Seattle (which means they get the worst trauma cases sent to them), and it's true, they have a ton of specialists. It's also a teaching hospital, if I'm not mistaken (but so is Swedish, I think...). Virginia Mason is pretty basic, but privately funded (I think the Nordstrom family contributes to them - it's either them or Swedish), so it's a little "fancier".

  • We were JUST talking about this.

Virginia Mason's whole philosophy is on not over-testing or preforming any unneccassary procedures. Not that they skimp on anything but that they've perfected not wasting time. Their idea is that if you don't spend time on unneccassary testing, you can see people faster and more efficiently, without wasting their time, getting to solutions faster. So, you don't wait to be seen, you don't spend unneccassry time in the hospital, and so on.

They actually are used as an example in other countries for how they process patients. They are nationally recognized as one of the best health car facilities.

(My mum recently came to visit from Canada, and she's been here in the past as a healthcare director.)

  • I really like Virgina Mason. My PD is at Kirkland and I see my neurologist in Seattle. IMO they are great with making appointments and every doctor or nurse I see are really friendly.

When I need to go to the emergency room (usually for kidney stones), I like Swedish. Very clean and friendly staff. I go to the Redmond location since it's the closest to my house.

Also, Steven's hospital in Edmonds is a lot better once Swedish took over. I had heard bad things about it when it was Stevens.
