poll: is this weird?

DH has a friend from when he was stationed in Hawaii. They had a "brother/sister" type friendship. There was never any type of romantic involvement. She married a good friend of his and has 4 children. They live far away but she is close by for a class for a few weeks and she came up yesterday and spent the night. She was teasing us abou our tvs (they are not flat screen, not HD) and said she was going to buy us a new tv. I thought it was a joke. DH just said he things she is really going to buy us a tv.

Re: poll: is this weird?

  • Yes, it's weird. Even if she was a super close friend that I saw all the time, I'd be insulted. Never mind someone who lives far away who I don't see that often. That'd be really strange if she actually went out and bought a tv.

  • Do you guys exchange gifts?  Do you send gifts for her kids or something?

If you have the type of relationship where you exchange gifts or spoil her kids and she doesn't reciprocate, I could see wanting to make a big gesture.  I don't quite "get it" myself, but I could see where she would think of that.

Is she staying in you guys' house while she's doin the class?  I could see wanting to buy a new tv as a thank you.

Just buying it because she feels you guys are deprived with your older tvs?  Weird.

No exchanging of gifts, it is the first time we have seen her in 6 years. We did send a check when they got married in Hawaii and we couldn't make it. They were invited to ours and couldn't make it but did not send a gift. Our check was not big though, nothing like what a tv would cost.

She stayed over one night this weekend and may stay 2 more. That's it.

  • It's kind of presumptuous of her to assume that you even WANT a new tv in the first place. I have a regular old 19 inch tv in my bedroom that is not HD, flat screen, any of that. I got it when I went to college, so its what, 13 years old (geez figuring that out makes me feel old!) and I am perfectly happy with it.

This is definitely weird, and it would make me uncomfortable for sure.

  • Yeah, that's kind of weird. I don't think she'll follow through, though.

  • I definitely think it's weird...and a little rude of her.

I didn't even think of this, but also totally true. It'd be kind of wasteful to replace a television that's working perfectly fine.

  • Yeah, it's a little odd... is she offbeat as a person though?  And my other question-- are she and her husband well to do?  I know someone like this.  She's wealthy and she buys friends extravagant things without wanting anything in return... it's just how she expresses her appreciation for the person.  She's offbeat as a person, though, and it's just her thing.

The part that bothers me is that I personally would feel all "geez, sorry we are so low tech that you simply have to give us your charity so we can be welcomed to this century."  I guess maybe I'd be touchy about it?  I don't think you should feel that way, I just think I would.

Hopefully she won't follow through and it won't create awkwardness.

  • I was going to ask if she was well to do. I have a couple people in my life (my in-laws and my nana) that like buying extravagant gifts. It's how they show love. Example: when we moved to LA, we were surprised to find most apartments do not come with refrigerators. We had heard of a good place to get refurbished ones, and were also checking Craigslist. This freaked out my MIL ("there could have been a dead body in there!") so she bought us a new refrigerator.... a nice one. It took some getting used to to accept gifts like this, but extravagant gift givers also tend to be very stubborn in my experience. Once they get this idea in their head, they're not giving it up for anything. My in-laws are pretty well-to-do, and for them, the cost of a new refrigerator is a drop in the bucket. That being said, there's a difference between a relative and a friend you haven't seen in 6 years.
