Moving Suggestions

Hello everyone! I'm currently living in the New River Valley area (Roanoke/Blacksburg/etc) but am looking to move over the summer. I am a Speech pathologist in a public schools, and would like to stay in that arena to keep my retirement benefits. I am trying to decide between the Richmond and NOVA areas. Any suggestions? I am a small-town rural kind of gal, but looking forward to the experiences of a city life! Thanks in advance for any help :)

Re: Moving Suggestions

  • The closer you move to a large city (ie: DC) the less you experience small town, rural life.  If you enjoy not having neighbors right on top of you and not being stuck in traffic for considerable amounts of time, the closer-in cities in NOVA may not be for you.

If you want to consider NOVA, try cities like Reston, Manassas and Herndon- things that are about an hour or so away from DC.

I hear Richmond is beautiful, although we haven't been.  I have a friend who lives there and he says it is much more like where we grew up in the midwest than the really urban areas in and around DC.

For me, I enjoy the conveniences of "city" life and presence of cultural experiences, the availability of mass transit and good restaurants, plentiful shopping and the variety of choices an urban area allows me.  That said, I don't live in DC, I live in Old Town Alexandria, because I can walk to work and get everything I need (including things from Target or another big box type of store) within 10 min.

  • just have to say I am jealous!!! We would love to move to the NRV at some point but the jobs are not there for DH....He was a hokie and I lived in blackbsurg for grad school

that being said, Richmond and northern VA are VERY different.  I was a teacher for 5 years before my DS, I love living in northern va where you have access to everything but you also have lots and lots of traffic...that is something you dont have in richmond.....i would take a look at job openings in both places and go from there..good luck!

  • I'd also factor in the school systems for your career.  My best friend is a speech pathologist for Fairfax County, and she's getting ready to leave public schools and go private.  Her schools aren't able to support her in what she needs for the kids, and gets the equivalent of less than 10 minutes of 1 on 1 time per kid, per week.  She recognizes what the kids need, but has her hands tied by too many kids/too little staff, and politics and paperwork that take her away from actually helping.  I know its been VERY frustrating and stressful for her, so I'd definitely network to see what the schools are like in the different areas - in Nova you have cities like Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Herndon and then counties like Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun.
  • i am a city girl at heart so i love living in DC. i also like alexandria (very close to DC but has a completely different feel) and loudoun county (quaint and pretty and does feel far from the city even though it's only an hour). i can't speak to richmond but i would definitely explore job opportunities in both areas and go from there. good luck!
