Poll

What kind of car(s) do you have? We're still car shopping and completely open for suggestions. We have a truck so the second car needs to be good on gas.

PIP! (if you can)

  • I'll start. We (well H) has a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 HEMI. Between the last two deployments we were just looking around and Dodge was offering a deal where we got close to $9k off MSRP in rebates and such so we just couldn't pass up the deal. It still has to be lifted and different rims/tires, but that'll be another couple months or so. He also has a dual sport that he rides to work because it gets 72 mpg! Both of his 'toys'.

  • DH has a 2005 Accord, which is really good on gas. I have a 98 Explorer. It only had 44k on it when I bought it in 07. It is not good on gas. When it dies, I am thinking about getting a Focus, I really like the new ones, or maybe a fusion

  • I have a 2006 Ford Taurus. Nothing fancy, but it's paid for. In all honesty this is the second Taurus I've owned and I think the Fusion is comparable. I love it. I was t-boned in college and the windows didn't even break; I walked away from that accident while the guy who hit me got a ride in an ambulance.

We are looking at a different car for me, likely a Chevy Equinox or Toyota Camry. DH dislikes Ford but I would not be opposed to buying a Fusion. I dislike the Focus, or, as my manager-of-an-O'Reilly Uto Parts-brother calls them, a F***us.

    lol.

  • I have a Nissan Versa. I originally wanted the hatchback do I'd have more trunk space, but I ended up with a sedan (after looking for months) and I've yet to fill it, even when I have to take 2 months worth of recycling to the recycling center. It's great on gas and pretty cute.

DH has a GMC Envoy. It's more luxurious than my car and has a lot of bells and whistles. We chose his car because we needed something that can pull a trailer, since we'll be moving several times in the next couple of years and with the baby and the dogs in the car, we can't fit much else. It's good on gas for an SUV.

  • We have a 2007 Forrester and a 2011 Outback.  Both get decent gas mileage for small SUV's (around 30 mpg on the highway) but I'd much rather still have my little 2004 Civic back.  It got great mileage--up to 40 mpg--and was the most reliable car I've ever owned.  Sadly two carseats really didn't comfortably fit in the backseat.

  • I have a 2007 Toyota corolla and love it. I get about 38mpg high way and 33mpg in town. I bought it new and have 54k miles on it, we've been talking about trading it I for something a little bigger though, a car seat fits fine in the backseat but we travel a lot so if we have a baby it would be too small for that. I'm either going to get a Nissan Altima or Honda accord.

DH had a 2007 Chevy silverado, I love it but Chevy trucks are also my favorite. I like that when we're on road trips it doesn't get that bad of gas mileage, it has the thing where if you have it set to cruise control it goes down to I think 4cyl to save gas. Its usually 18mpg highway and 14 in town  He kind of wants to trade it in for a quad cab since his is only extended, but I think we'll wait a few years because it only has 30k miles on it. He also has a 2009 Kawasaki ninja 500 that gets amazing gas mileage but he only got such a small one to learn I so he'll be upgrading to a bigger one soon.

I have the Ex edition and it has a sun roof and all sorts of extras. My Mom had, and my Dad now drives a 2008 Lx edition.  My car is more comfortable than my Moms. It gets about 18mpg in town and 25 or so on the highway. I like it because it sits up higher than my 1999 Honda Civic did and we have quite a bit of space. The seats go down easy if needed. It doesn't have 4wd which I wish it had but it is available on these SUVs. My Mom's has it. And this is kind of silly, but it has two tap out drawers in the consul and under the passenger seat! I love that feature because I can keep things like my blue tooth and wetones wipes at the ready.

Oh and we have had a "head on" in this car and were okay after words. Car was not nearly as damaged as it could have been.

ETA: And it has plenty of leg and head room. Which was a concern for us since we are both fairly tall. And it fits a car seat just fine.

  • I have a 2005 Toyota Matrix. I love it and it gets fabulous gas mileage, 36+ on the highway. Surprisingly, our car seats fit comfortably. We just don't have room for anyone else. That's fine with us though. We are going to be looking for a new car in the next year. Personally, I want a Venza or the Prius mini van that is coming soon. Honestly, we will consider any crossover/mini-van that is good with gas.

DH has a 2001 F-250. The only reason we don't want to get rid of it is because it is good for hauling things when we need to and it is paid for.

  • I drive a 2010 Jeep Liberty.  I love it, and it's my second one in a row.  I leased a 2008 when the new model first came out, and when my lease was up I was considering buying it out because I still loved it.  It ended up only being an extra $20/month to buy brand new than to buy my lease out.  It looks like this, but I added the second pic of the sky slider roof because that's my absolute favorite part of it!  Oh and it's horrible on gas; I think 15 city and 19 highway, but I still love it.

H drives a 2006 BMW 3xi.  It's better on gas, but he has to put premium gas in, so it kinda balances out.  He got a great deal on it though because someone had just turned it in from a lease and he was able to buy it before the certified it (certified pre-owned thing), so he saved like $5k or something by them doing the certification after.

  • I have a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe.

    http://www.hyundaicarpic.info/images/hyundai-santa-fe-9.jpg

(Don't know how to make it a clicky) But it's a cross over SUV. I get around 24-29 hwy MPG and 20-22mpg city driving. It was the best bang for my buck I could get for the size.

Mine is a certified pre-owned from a dealership so it came with a 5 year 60k warranty.  :)

OH ETA: My H drives a 2010 Ford Fusion and loves it. His is not the hybrid but I know his mpg is a lot higher than mine.

  • I drive a 2009 Jeep Compass. I absolutely love it. I had 2 old Jeep Cherokees growing up that I drove and I will always be a Jeep girl. Its not bad on gas mileage, but not super. I think its like 19 in the city and 23 on the highway.

H has a 2001 Yukon XL. Its got a freaking huge tank and costs a good amount to fill it up, but you can drive for like 6 hours before you even need to think about filling up.

  • We have a Chevy Truck and a Chrysler mini van.  I love them both.  With 4 kids, we really can't keep it small.  My van get's decent gas milage for a bigger car at nearly 30MPG.

If I were getting something smaller, I'd get a Chevy Traverse.  I love that car.  I also drove a Dodge Charger the other day and loved it.  Not sure on the gas milage on that one, though.  I had a Toyota Corolla for a long time.  I really liked that car.  It was great on milage and lasted forever.  It had nearly 200k miles on it when I sold it and it still ran great.

  • We have a 2004 VW Passat.

It's been fantastic. It's been in two wrecks and I barely felt them (not my fault, btw! lol) I will say that the oil changes are crazy pricey... VWs are needy cars... But I get 38mpg and that rocks. It's also a little heavier, has a huge trunk space, and front wheel drive so it's got great control/handling

We also have a 2007 Mazda mx5 (the newer miata <--- Totally H's hahaha)

It gets good gas milage too.. about 28-30mpg. It has INCREDIBLE handling because it's reerwheel.. It would be the worst thing in the world come snow time, but man that sucker has crazy grip and handling. I used to make fun of him for the car until I drove it myself.. lol. It has horribly small trunk space though. It's definitely a small thing, but fun :)

  • I drive a 2008 Mustang (practical, I know) that gets horrible gas mileage and will get even worse gas mileage once J gets home and adds all the shiit he bought for it.

    He drives a 2005 Honda CBR 600RR.

  • I drive a 2003 Miata that I overpaid for when I was 22 and H drives a 2006 Dodge Ram that he wishes he had never bought. I love my car, H hates his, because it has a very high payment and he would much rather drive something like a civic and save on the payment and gas, now that he's older and more fiscally responsible.

I swear I remember a new car for you recently (besides the truck/bike) in the last couple years. What happened to your car?

ETA: Last October, you posted that you had recently gotten a Ford Edge and that YH had a Nissan 350z. What happened to those? I can't fathom buying new cars so often, partly because I love my little Zippy Miata and partly because I hate having such a large chunk of income going to car payments.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • DH has a 2006 XTerra. I hate it and wish someone would steal it, but no one ever will, because it's a loud, ugly, ridiculous waste of gas mileage. I'm on my third freaking car since we PCSd CONUS in the end of 2007, which breaks my heart. I had an awesome Volvo S-60, but when we got Bandit, we just couldn't safely fit two large dogs in the backseat, so we pinched pennies while I was deployed and paid mostly cash for a Jetta TDI wagon. That was the biggest hunk of junk ever and having a new car in the shop two or three days a month just wasn't acceptable, seeing as I have a job and their shuttle wouldn't go to the base. After over a year of having an unreliable car, I traded it in for a Subaru Outback.

  • DH has an old beater Jetta that we paid cash for. It gets him to and from work and that's it. It is completely falling apart but we'll be getting rid of it soon.

I drive a 2001 Rav 4 that is fully paid for. Runs great and is in great condition but with two giant car seats we are looking to expand. Which is why we are looking at minivan's tomorrow! I'm nervous but so excited.

The thought of having a car payment again makes me want to hurl but I know we'll be fine. Between DH's raise he'll be getting from going E to O next spring (woop woop!) and a little bit of "beans and rice livin!" our plan is to have new cars for H and I paid off within a year of purchasing. He desperately needs something reliable and I really need something comfortable since we'll be doing a lot of traveling over the next few years.

We are hoping to sell my current car to a private party for just around what we paid for it two years ago.  Not much wear/tear/mileage has been put on it and we slightly overpaid for it at the time anyway haha.  All fundage from that sale will go directly towards the car loan and we'll have at least one of them halfway paid off.

We did have both of those cars but got rid of them. The Edge was a ridiculous impulse buy that was completely my fault. The Z was falling apart. It would choose when it wanted to start or when it wanted to be a hunk of metal (..or plastic?) and it was becoming harder and harder to start by the day. It often left us stranded places. We took it to numerous places and kept getting "we can't find anything wrong with it". Both were used. We have had HORRIBLE luck with used cars, which is why we decided to buy the truck new.

We also had a 07 VW when we first got married that would just shut off while you were driving. Let me tell you, that was fun on the freeway. For a car that new it should not have been doing that.

We have been kind of irresponsible with cars and realize now that we have not been the most 'financially savvy' in our decisions. That is why I'm so indecisive while choosing this one. We plan to keep both until they fall apart. I'm super hesitant to get a used, but don't want the payment of a new. *shrug*

  • Good luck finding one! I think I would get something that rental companies use as economy cars, they tend to choose cheap and reliable.

Were they Certified Pre-Owned or did you buy them from a private owner used?

Both my vehicles have been certified pre-owned and I could not have been happier. It really does make a difference so don't loose hope on all used cars. :)

  • Marie, we've had a number of cars during our marriage, as well, including two Z's (well, DH traded his coupe in for a roadster shortly after we started dating). We are working hard to make better choices.

We are currently a one car family. This was a big step for my DH. When we met, he owned two (nice) cars. So, for a brief time, we had three cars and two drivers. Our one vehicle is a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We love it. It is a great ride and comfortable!! We don't drive a ton (less than a thousand miles a month), so the less than fabulous MPG isn't killing us.

Our plan was to get a second car, something smaller and more commuting friendly, when we PCS this Spring. But, it looks like we'll be able to hold off another year before getting a second car.

Good luck with your decision. I'm personally a BIG fan of Hondas.

  • We have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and we love it. We had a POS Saturn Vue that broke down every few months, and with $2500 left on our loan, we found out our transmission was going out and it needed a ton of other work totaling over $8k. So we said no thanks to the ridiculous amount of repairs and ended up purchasing our Jeep in February and couldn't be happier. It's not great on the gas mileage but is so much nicer and reliable than our last SUV. Plus, we're going to get the towing package installed before summer so we can tow stuff if we ever end up buying the wave runners H wants. GL on the car shopping!
