who was telling me about dal?

one of my bff's just came back from her second stay in India this year. she was telling me that i'd love dal.

who was telling me about it on here? do you make it or did you buy it? can i buy it to try it? i googled a recipe and it looks like a TON of ingredients and i don't even know if i like it yet.

anyway, she didn't really learn many recipes because her boyfriend did all the cooking.

  • Any indian restaurant will have it, but i don't always like it... try it at a couple places if your aren't sure if you like it.  They might have it listed as lentil soup on the menu, but imo it tastes best if it's on the thicker side ("sticks" to naan* when dipped in it, or even thick enough to can be spooned onto the naan).

*naan = a flat bread, kind of like a rustic pita

Re: making it at home... In addition to the lentils, which are super cheap ($1/lb in bulk, or $1.50/bag), you'll probably have some spices to buy.  Bulk spices are the way to go.  They cost a lot less per oz, and you can get just the amount you need.  I'm sure PCC sells bulk spices; WF might also.  The rest is basic stuff (garlic, broth, etc.).

  • Ok, so the recipe has more ingredients than i remembered, but it's pretty simple.

2 T coconut oil (or other suitable oil/butter)
    2 garlic cloves, crushed
    1/2 onion, chopped
    .5 t tumeric
1 t garam masala (it's a mixture of spices you can buy pre-mixed)
    .25 t chili powder
    1 t ground cumin
1 med. can diced or crushed tomatoes (14 oz, i think)
1 sm can tomato paste (the tiny can)
    1 cup dry lentils
    2 t lemon juice (optional)
1.5 c vegetable broth (2/5 if you prefer it on the thinner side)
10 oz coconut milk (actually, i use a whole 14-oz can of light coconut milk)
    salt and pepper if desired
red chili flakes or other heat as desire

    1. Melt coconut oil in large saucepan.  Add garlic and onion and cook until onion is translucent.  Add spices, stir to mix and cook for about a minute.
    2. Add tomatoes, lentils, lemon juice, broth and coconut milk.  Bring to a boil.
    3. Reduce heat, simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes (until lentils are the right texture).
    4. Add salt, pepper and heat (as in chilis, etc.), as desired and serve with rice (i like brown, but white basmati is popular) and/or warm naan.
    Reheats well.
I've made it with veggies (carrots, primarily) in it, too, but that's not how it's generally prepared.
