IUD and migraines

Anyone suffer from migraines and have an IUD put in? I currently have the Nuva Ring and use it continuously (not having a cycle) to help prevent migraines. I'm thinking about an IUD, but don't know how it would affect my migraines. Anyone have any experience??

It's probably the hormones causing the migraines. If I were you, I would talk to your healthcare provider about the Paragard IUD (non-hormonal).

  • Just FYI ... last year I started getting migraines probably 5 times a week.  I went to the eye dr - nope eyes are great.  So, I went to my reg Dr who put me on meds.  My DH didn't like me taking meds for it when it could be something more serious.  The Dr. didnt think it was necessary to do any MRI or anything ... but nevertheless I stopped taking them (mainly because they can have BAD side effects on babies if we get pregnant - not that we're trying yet! :) )

Long story short, I started working out religiously (appx 5 times a week) for the 6 months before our wedding and my headaches stopped completely.  Now, after the wedding I've slacked ... and they're coming back.  SO ... time to start working out again - I should anyway!

So, maybe look at other things that could be different other than just the IUD?

  • Thanks for the info! Was thinking about switching from Nuva Ring to an IUD, but decided not to. I have no issues with the ring, so I don't want to switch after all.
