Your Favorite (non-sneaker) Walking Shoes

DH and I are planning for our March trip to Italy.  I know we are going to be doing a lot of walking.  As such, I would like to find a comfortable pair on non-sneaker walking shoes.  They don't have to be fashionalbe, but comfort is a must!  Thanks!

ETA: We will be in Naples half the time and then down to Pisa area.  Then a few days in London.

  • Northern or Southern - in other words, what's your best guess on temp?
  • I recently got these and I wore them around this weekend and was very happy with them.

They aren't the most stylish but what I like is that they *feel* like a tennis shoe. There is plenty of padding and support which is important to me since I have back issues.

  • i wore my sneakers during the day (new balance 993s) and then changed into flats if we were doing a fancier dinner. i also had privos but they were still not comfortable enough for all day walking on cobblestones.

  • I have two pairs of these Privos and like them a lot.  You have to get them online, b/c this model is a year or two old.  In the last year, they have done a complete redesign of their shoes, and the new ones aren't nearly as comfortable.  But I've worn these for years to commute roundtrip 2-3 miles to work, and they are great.

They are a lot cuter than they look in these pictures.  I get compliments on them all the time.  From strangers.

  • I really love my Mary Jane-style Crocs.  I also like my Skechers bike-style shoes.

  • I haven't been to Italy, but I'd imagine it might have stone walk ways, perhaps a bit uneven and old, and I'd want to wear flat riding boots for more ankle support too.

I used to have these (until a foster dog chewed on them ugh) but they were SO comfortable, and were always my go-to for when I had lots of walking plans.  I would recommend getting them now and breaking them in a few times though!

another one here too, that's what I wore all over Italy and had no issues.

  • Not shoe related (although I do love Privos), but are you set on going to Naples? It's really not the nicest area of Italy (although they have fabulous pizza!). If you're open to it, I would suggest heading over to Positano or north to other areas (Lake Como) instead.

Litasail, My niece and her DH are stationed there.  We will be doing loads of day trips to surrounding areas!
