Turkey Brine

I know this has been asked every November for the past 2934837 years on here, but someone had posted a really good turkey brine recipe. I'm sorry to post this again but since this is the first time I'm hosting turkey day, I never really cared to save the recipe in the past (I wish I did).

Does anyone have a good tried and true recipe with instructions? Thanks chicas!

Also, I don't think I've ever cooked a turkey before so any tips are greatly appreciated.

Re: Turkey Brine

  • I also wanted to note that DH wants to fry the turkey this year so I'm hoping a kick @ss brine recipe (as well as me not over cooking it) will help sell it to my husband. I really don't need the house burning down... again. The whole frying a turkey thing scares the crap out of me.

  • This is my first year hosting Thanksgiving too and was hoping someone would post this.

I've also been reading that if you are planning on using a brine, make sure you get a fresh turkey. The frozen turkeys you get at the supermarket are already injected with a solution to help them maintain moisture (and make it last longer) so it can become too salty if you brine it.

  • I don't have a brine recipe, but if you're looking for something a little different, I made a champagne basted turkey for my Christmas Eve open house last year.  It was a HUGE hit.

  • rum had a great one that she posted a long time ago...... maybe she will come in on this one. i am trying a cider braised recipe (http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/cider-braised-turkey-with-apples-10000000520119/) for my fakesgiving on 11/20.

Fried turkeys are fabulous. However, Id suggest manipulating a friend to make one because 1) figuring out what to do with the hardened oil after said turkey is fried is about as impossible as finding a way to ethically dispose of spray paint. 2) to avoid possible fires its best to stay nearby and keep an eye on the frying turkey--who wants to do that in the likely bone chilling weather of thanksgiving for a solid 4 hours while everyone else is eating appetizers and drinking wine in the warm house?

Thank you! I will use those points! I did tell DH that if he were to fry it, it needs to be in the driveway by the street. I'm not kidding when I say that I'm terrified of this.

As far as disposal goes, DH is a mechanic and I know they have a ton of bins at work for disposing chemicals/oil/etc. I'm sure he could dispose of the left over frying oil there.
