Today, MH received a BEAUTIFUL quilt made for him by a group of volunteers as part of the Quilt of Valor Foundation's project. Volunteers from all over the country make quilts to "cover our soldiers." The project was started when a woman heard about soldiers who returned home wounded in spirit as well as (or instead of) in body.
At today's ceremony, there were a number of veterans and active service men and women who received quilts-- including a WWII veteran!! (He walked up and across the stage-- pretty spry for a guy who was at least 88 years old!) There was also a few people who received a quilt on behalf of a loved one was who KIA (yes, I totally bawled).
Anyhow, Wayne's family and my parents came to the ceremony and it was an amazing experience-- strangers thanking MH for his service and veterans thanking each other and family members! It was the best of what our country is about...
On the way home, MH told a whole ton of stories (some he had only hinted at before) from his time in Iraq and Bosnia... for the first time, he really opened up about what it was like-- and about the two times he should have died but got saved because of a dud RPG and a poorly detonated IED.
Just an incredible day... and a BEAUTIFUL quilt:
