What a day at the OB :/

I had my glucose test today. I guess they wait until my next appt in 2 weeks to tell me the results, weird, right?? And my blood pressure was crazy high so they made me stay for almost 2 hours. It was still slightly elevated when I left, but he said it was ok. But rather than 4 weeks until my next appt, he is starting me on 2 weeks now. Should I be nervous?? (Sorry for format, I'm typing on my phone.)

Re: What a day at the OB :/

  • C always got her GTT results a day or two later, so I don't think that's too weird - I'm sure they'll call you if there's a problem/you failed.

I think its good they're starting you on every 2 weeks now if your BP is up! Better to be proactive! Do you have a gauge you can use at home to monitor? Sometimes C's would be higher than normal at the doc's so we'd test it at home w/ my dad's unit.  It seemed to mostly be high when she was rushed/stressed w/ work.  Did your doc order a 24hr screen (urine) to check for proteins/get a baseline in case your BP continues to be up?

We do have a cuff at home that A can use to check it at home. OB said next time we'll do more testing if it's still elevated. I was pretty nervous before this appt AND had more drama with my mom yesterday, so I'm not surprised it was high...just how high it was (142/90). My urine test today was negative. I just hope it goes back to normal in 2 weeks!

  • I'm betting they will call you if you failed.  I never even heard the number results of my glucose test.  My office is strictly "no news is good news" and when I went to my 31 week appt (test was at 28 weeks), I don't think he even brought it up.

As for 2 week appts starting now - I don't think it's much to be concerned about.  My OB starts them at 31 weeks (so I went at 28, then 31, 33, 35, etc).  It sounds like they just want to keep an eye on your BP which is good!

  • I wouldn't worry too much. You can check it at home and if its high there you can always call, and just keep an eye out for other weird things like headaches. Try to relax :)
  • Yikes, that is high. I second Emily, just watch for other warning signs. I am sure that it was high due to stress. I am sure he office will call you if you fail. Sending good thoughts you way.

  • My OB was always no news is good news for the glucose tests.  If the results aren't ideal they'll either call you or talk to you at the next appointment about the 3 hour test.  I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

For the blood pressure, 140 / 90 is just getting into the hypertension numbers.  As long as it comes down, that's a good sign.  My numbers were always 120 / 80 while on meds, but a few times it was up to 130's and 140's so they just had me come back for blood pressure checks.  I think I went every week in July and I was still on 4 week appointments.

My OB was really only concerned when my numbers were 180's and then 160's for the remainder of my pregnancy (yes, still got those numbers even on blood pressure meds).

It's a good thing they want you to come back more often, but I wouldn't be too concerned right now.  You aren't showing any other signs of pre-e and again you said your numbers did come down.  It's quite possible that this number may have just been a fluke.  If after a few more checks they are still concerend, they may put you on a baby safe blood pressure med (I was on Labetalol).  Sometimes pregnancy can just cause hypertension as well.  As long as you are well monitored, no need for worry!

Try not to stress about it too much!

  • Do you feel like you have white coat syndrome? Would they be willing to let you monitor it at home as well and report back what it is?

Also, how is your protein intake? If you aren't getting 80+ grams a day I'd start shooting for that now as it can DRASTICALLY reduce the chances of PIH turning into something like PRE-E

    google the Brewer diet ;)
