Camera Recommendations

I've mentioned before that I hate our Canon P&S and want to get a new camera.

I just want a camera to take lasting picture memories that aren't dark or overexposed like this camera does inside and with low light (outdoor pictures are fine). I tried working with this one: with and without flash, changing the lighting inside, changing the exposure time on manual setting. I don't think a DSLR is necessary for me and I'd still prefer a camera more similar in size to a P&S that I could put into my purse or bag.

Any ideas or recommendations on where to start or specific cameras to look at? It seems like Nikon and Canon are the top two brands? I like that new Nikon S9100.

Re: Camera Recommendations

  • we have a compact DSLR (this one, and you can get them cheaper elsewhere). Its a nice place between the P&S and a true DSLR. It fits nicely in my purse, and I don't have to worry about padding it/the lenses, etc. It is not fantastic in low light, but I am also not good at adjusting things/shooting manually or semi manually (and not all that anxious to learn, so a DSLR wouldn't be a great investment for me).Once in a while I'll shooting RAW in lower light and I can generally edit any issues with lighting (and now that I now know to change the ISO, I've resolved a lot of my problems).

My SIL has a Nikon, a similar model at a much higher price point. Her's is more compact and takes better photos, but I am happy with ours for the $.

  • I don't have a specific recommendation, but also check out the Panasonic Lumix line - they make a great camera.

  • I have a canon sd1000 elph that I love. Still use it, even with having a dslr. Fits in a purse, takes good pics. Half our Hawaii pics were taken on that camera.

That's the one we have, hahaha. I hate it so much. We used it Hawaii too. Outdoor pictures are fine, it is the indoor ones that it sucks at. And of course if I'm taking pictures of the baby, I imagine a lot will be indoor.

Thanks for the info so far!
