Int'l move - all ok, little move - freaking out!

why is it that I have moved overseas twice (MN to london to sydney)

and was fine with all of that

but now that we're only moving half an hour away I am freaking out

about not knowing the area, not knowing any people, moving into a big house when I have lived in such small flats for 10 years - it's like the reverse of when I moved from MN to London.

I guess it's partly because my baby group is where we are living now and I've made a couple of good friends who won't want to drive out to where we are barely ever, I know I can still drive to see them, but *sigh* it all just feels VERY scary which seems ridiculous considering I've done overseas moves..... I dunno......

don't get me wrong - I am excited for the move - I'm happy to be closer to work, have a yard for G to play in, more space, etc. *sigh* I just need to be happy about it and stop worrying I guess, but I love the area we're in so much that I wish we could just live in this 2 bed flat forever sometimes ....

  • I can understand. It's not a big enough move to be super exciting and new, but it's just enough to disrupt your life. I can see how that would be hard.

Don't anticipate the difficulties. Maybe you'll find a nice play group in your new area. Maybe the neighbors and moms will be super friendly. Don't worry too much. Focus on the positive aspects of the move.

  • I understand completely, DH and I are in the same kind of boat.  Our house in Brisbane is really close to the city, our friends and some excellent areas, not to mention both DH and I grew up in the area (hell we bought the house he grew up in!) But it is small, extending our family isn't an option there and we really need to move.  Thank goodness this move to Indonesia came up and we could put off the decision making a bit longer.

Good luck with the move, I am sure it will go so much better than you think!

  • thanks ladies - yea I guess I just need to focus on the positive

exactly mrshooi - I wish we could just stay where we are but it's just WAY too expensive to buy a house here with a yard, etc *sigh*

well - at least I'm still only half an hour from the beach :)

  • Being a half hour from the beach sounds fantastic!

Yeah, I think we did better on our move overseas than on our move a few years ago to a bigger flat. Since it was so close, we just kind of bumbled around while when we moved overseas we were super organised with lists and proper packing. We're looking to move soon to another flat and I'm just dreading it.

I'm sure there are going to be things that are awesome in your new place! am so jealous of anyone who lives anywhere where a backyard BBQ is a possibility.

  • Can totally relate, we have our tiny house for sale at the moment.  WE live in an area where the location is fantastic and I don't have to drive everywhere.  But when we finally move to a bigger house we are think of an area that is on the other side of the city, and we will be away from everyone else, and I will have to pay for parking when I go to the city centre.

But I do think about the space and the bigger garden and the better schools.
