We're upgrading our bed (moving from a full to a queen) when we move into our new apartment in 4 weeks time, and I'm feeling totally overwhelmed by the process (mostly by cost).
Are box springs going the way of the dodo? Anyone own an organic mattress?
Where do you get your bedding from? We're currently using a quilt that my aunt made for us for our wedding, but that won't fit on a new bed, and I'd really like to go the quilt route again... only... like... modern quilting, not traditional. Any suggestions?
Re: Bed/bedding questions
We bought a new mattress when we moved in March. Box springs are definitely still around, that's what we got. The mattress itself is a spring mattress with a pillowtop (about 15" thick in total), and the box spring is 4" but there was the option to get a 6" one. It's organic, I can't remember if it's Sealy or Serta but one of those. We didn't get it specifically because it's organic, but just because it was the most comfortable one we tried.
We spent quite a lot on it and I have to admit that I'm kind of disappointed that there are already impressions in it. (I mean, it's not like V and I are huge people...). I looked at the warranty, and body impressions are covered as long as they exceed a certain depth, so I need to measure them one of these days and see if we can make a claim. Blech.

Our queen size bed was the first major purchase Derek and I made together, it seemed like a lot at the time!
We've got a box spring with ours, but it was nearly 5 years ago.
As for bedding, I think I've seen some nice quilted blankets at Bed Bath and Beyond (so probably at Home Outfitters too).
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
I prefer a lot of the more modern platform beds, so we did not buy a box spring. We have a Tempur-Pedic and I could not recommend it more highly, although it's not organic as far as I know. It's super expensive but it's got a 20 or 30 year warranty on it, so I felt like it was worth it. The quality of our sleep is seriously so much better than before.
Our bedding is from the Hotel Collection at Macy's. I love the modern style of that line, and a lot of it can be mix-and-matched.
We just got a new bed--also a box spring, and ditto ringy on the impressions. We have a Simmons Beautyrest plush pillowtop, fairly sure it's not organic. It's very comfortable, we're both sleeping great, but it's disappointing to see the impressions already happening. We thought about going with something like a Tempur-Pedic like Jane, but we balked at the price.
I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond for the basics. I'm still searching for a nice collection that isn't going to cost a ton, though. I loved a lot of West Elm's stuff, but it doesn't fit our decor.
How much do Tempur-pedic beds run for? A few thousand, right?
Gah, choosing a mattress is just so damned hard! I looked on Consumer Reports and they could barely give company reviews let alone mattress reviews.

Our major purchase when we moved in together was for a mattress as well. We have a pillow top queen and a split box spring. We did the split so we could move it into and out of rooms easier. I think we paid around $1K for everything. We also got the mattress protector, because it kept our warranty. If any water stains or something are on the mattress when we make a claim, then it's void. It's actually time for a new protector, because all the PUL just started flaking off. Not a purchase I want to make right now. I think that was $100+ as well.
It really is just a matter of going to the store and laying on all the beds. No magazine or website will be able to tell you what will work for you guys. Brand, maybe. I, for one, hated the posturepedic. I have bad joints, and it made my shoulders lay funny. It was more comfortable for me to have a pillow top instead. My ILs have a crazy firm mattress, because they think it helps their backs.
Yeah, ours was around $3k just for the mattress, but we also have a Cal. King and ours is a mid-level option. I think you can get some of their more basic models in queen size for somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500.
It was kind of a splurge obviously, but we say at least once a week that it was worth every penny. My parents have a generic memory foam mattress and it was misshapen/indented within a couple years.
I totally agree with this. It is such a personal choice. I think the best you can do is narrow your choices down to several high-quality brands and then go test a bunch of them out.
My boss bought a Tempur Pedic knock off kind from Overstock.com. He ordered a huge California king and it was under 1,000.00. He said he's been really happy with it. I'm not sure if they deliver to Canada.
As for Quilts. I use a Duvet, but have typically bought my bedding from Macy's.
