S/O: Daycare in the VA and MD areas?

i was just reading another post where someone quoted upwards of $2k/month for daycare.  is that typical?  we live in ohio but use a very good daycare/school for our dd (Primrose School) and it's about $1200/month for infants and we're now paying $974/month for her pre-kdgtn class.  Should I expect that a similar place/program will cost more money out there???   what's the average for a good/quality daycare program?

this is where we are now and it's a chain, but i'm sure the price varies base on location/cola.  http://www.primroseschools.com/  there are a couple locations set to open soon in VA, but will likely be too far for us.

  • I think $2k/month is on the high side, but it's not out of the question. $1500-1800/mo for infants is very common. Prices go down when kids are older. Our daycare has a preschool for older kids, and I think they charge around $1200/month for the pre-k program.

  • you will probably get more responses on the DC Area Babies bump board.

there are a variety of daycare and preschool types: in-home, center, faith-based, Montessori, etc. and they each have different price points.

i'd say it's not unreasonable that a daycare center in this area might cost about $2k/month. i have a friend who wanted to send her son to a pre-K program at a private school at $30k/year (i think that's unreasonable, but i also plan to send my kids to public school and i think this school continues up through 8th grade). instead, they chose a pre-K that is $1900/month at a different private school.

it's also not unreasonable to find a faith-based preschool for much less than that. even the Montessori that we looked at was about $16k/year, which would be a little more than $1300/month.

based on some of the conversations we've had over on the bump about DC costs, there doesn't seem to be much variance in costs in, close in and further out from DC.

  • at our center, infants are a little over $1700/mo, pre-school is $1140/mo, I am in Loudoun Co

  • we have just started looking at montessori for next year, and school plus after care is about $330 per week. So per month, $1330-1450. This is no change from our daycare provider.

The center near my office in Arlington is $1900 per month- this is a center that takes from infant to kindergarten.

  • I'm in Loudoun Cty also - for my two kids Pre-K and Toddler room we pay about $2500 a month. Sadly that is pretty close to norm for the DC area....

  • Yep, sounds about right. In DC, the centers I found were $1500/month for infants, and about $1200/month for 3yrs-preK.

This is the #1 reason we do not have two kids in daycare, and are waiting until DS is in school to have #2 :(
