I have DH's 30th birthday is coming up and he wants something really low key. His party is scheduled at our house smack dab between a Thanksgiving dinner party and a baby shower I'm hosting so we've decided on fast-casual catering. He mentioned Cal Tort or Dickies. He doesn't like Baja Fresh and it's in the evening so I don't want to do just sandwiches.
Anyone have other suggestions or have used this kind of catering before? Were you happy? Am I ridiculous for thinking I could whip up a taco bar myself instead even with hosting the other parties?
Re: Fast-casual catering
I've never done anything like that at home, but we just had a taco bar for our end of the FY year dept meeting from Qdoba and it was just ok. Meat was kinda dry. H is having a taco bar at his work's year-end meeting tomorrow - apparently from On the Border. I can report back for you on how that one is.
You could also do a BBQ for catering. there's always famous daves, but there's also Kloby's off Johns Hopkins at MD 29 or Red Hot and Blue in Laurel or Annapolis, or...I'm sure there's others. (kloby's would be my choice out of those, but it's a little out of the way for you)
As for whether you could do it yourself with the other parties - I am not the right person to ask about that. My answer is yes. But I'm typically ridiculous.
My Goodness...another food blog. Featuring: Macarons from a old post with a photo taken by my mom for a break from my crappy food photos!
How about Expressway Pit Beef in Odenton? They cater and their food is quite good.

my birthday is on thanksgiving too! i can totally relate with getting everyone together for an actual event. i'll typically just let everyone know that we'll be at so and so bar ... come one come all. or i'll celebrate the weekend before.
We had Adam's Ribs "cater" for DDs baptism it was good and super-easy- they provided everything we needed (minus the cake) and it was ~$12 a person IIRC- about 3 years ago.
Since I know you like local have you looked into Punk's Backyard Grill or Metro Diner?
We had them cater our engagement party and the food was really good!! B actually knows the guy, so if you want email me and I will tell him to call those guys.
