Sewing.. Addicting!!!

I started sewing 2 months ago and now I can't stop !!! haha. I have always made fleece dog toys and fleece dog blankets and now with my new sewing skills have started to make dog clothing ! My sister and I started selling at Craft shows and it's quite fun ! We have a few craft shows set up from now until Christmas so I am pretty busy with sewing for that and I can't wait to start sewing dresses for my possible trip this winter ! :)

Has anyone made their own Bathing suit ? I am a beginner so not sure if this is something I should attempt right away or wait.. any suggestions?

  • Sewing is awesome! I make swim suits. I wouldn't suggest it as a beginner project. To make a suit that'll hold up. You will need a serger, double needles, and wholly nylon thread........I would wait till you have master some more sewing skills.

I would tackle a dress next.  If you want a challenge. Then move on to knits, shirts and the like. Sewing is so much fun!  Keep on going the sky is the limit!  :)

  • I'm planning to teach myself to sew and I can't wait!  Any suggestions on books, websites, etc?  I want to get a simple machine and start doing some simple projects, but I need to save up some money first.  The wedding sucked me dry!  :)

Threads Magazine has a Teach Yourself to Sew dvd (actually two volumes) that look pretty good. They have previews on their website.

I picked up this book, and thought it was a really good resource (and a great price)....even for an experienced seamstress.

  • Thanks for the info ! I took a Beginners class in my home town which was 4 classes, we learnt how to use the machine and made an apron and a hand bag. I thought it was a very good way to learn. I am now in the second level which we are learning to read a pattern and making pyjama pants. The third class is a dress, not sure if I should take it or try it out on my own... the classes are $160 a pop... so it's getting expensive just for the learning experience.

Would you recommend taking more classes?

I have a Brother NS-40 and I love it !! Very easy to use, mant different stitches and it works great!

I will look into this.  Thanks!!  I'm a complete beginner at sewing - I never even learned how to correctly sew a button on or anything.  So I'm wanting to start at the most basic level and move toward advanced.  I also thought I would check into classes to see if there is something offered in my area.  I just haven't had a chance to do that yet.

  • Update: I made a throw pillow cover last night!  It only took about 2 hours total, including watching the youtube video tutorial from Crafty Gemini.

It was actually pretty easy.  Now I just need to learn how to cut straight and I'll be in business!
