Can I ask some embarrassing questions - about Ipads?

Let's just start off by saying I'm older than a lot of you and I'm not an Apple person and I'm more technology-challenged than I care to admit.  However, I am possibly interested in getting an Ipad.  But, I'm confused about what the additional expenses will be.

So. ... I know the price varies based on the memory size - how do I know what memory size I should get?

Also - there's a WiFi or a WiFi + 3G.  What exactly does that mean?  I don't think our router is wireless - do I need to buy a new router for my house for the Ipad  to work?  Is this something I can do or do I need Verizon to do it?  If I use the Ipad  when I'm out and about - would I have to buy one of those cards that people plug into their laptops - who do I get that from?  My regular mobile phone provider - Sprint?  Also - are there free Apps or do you have to pay for all of them?  If you do pay for them - are they generally one time fees or subscription/monthly fees?

Also - who can hold my hand and tell me it'll be OK and I'm really not 100 years old.

  • You're not THAT old! I'm not a techie, but here is my 2 cents. Both DH and I have the 16G (I have the original, DH the iPad2) and that has been more than enough for both of us. We surf the net, listen to music, play games, keep J entertained while making dinner :) The WiFi +3G is just that, it is built into the iPad, so it is like a phone, you pay extra for the service to the provider (verizon, at&t, whoever) to be able to use it anywhere. WiFi is part of the base model, it allows you use it with a wireless network, if you get the 3G you wont need to get a wireless router, but w/o 3G you will. DH and I don't have the 3G because we have an air card (a mobile internet card, that is free standing, doesn't "plug in" it looks like a thick credit card) that he gets basically for free because he works for Comcast, so we didn't feel the need to get the 3G. When we get home (just like with my iPhone) and are near our router, the iPad automatically conncets to our home WiFi so that we dont' use up the time on our air card. Some aps are free, others cost from 0.99 and up, but it all depends. We have apps-painting, piano, PBS kids,-for J that were free and then a few that cost a few bucks. I absolutely LOVE my iPad.

  • I'm 31 and I work in IT and I don't have the answers to any of your questions! (does that make you feel better, lol) I am not an Apple person and my DH is against wireless because he is super paranoid, so we don't have an iPad or anything. But hopefully he will give in one day. I kind of want a tablet.

  • If my 68yo mother can figure it out, you'll be fine!

Do you have a laptop in your house or a PC?  If you have a laptop, chances are your router is wireless.  If you have a PC, it could go either way.

It depends on what you think you'd use the iPad for as to which memory you should get.  If you plan on just using it for fun stuff (not storing 10,000 pictures on it!), then you should be ok to get a 16G and not the 32G.

There's no need to go through Verizon unless you plan on getting an iPad with 3G because you'll have to pay a provider for the internet portion.  If you just get a regular iPad (and you have internet service at home), you'll be fine to just run it off of your current network...but your router needs to be wireless so it can pick up the signal.  So if your current router isn't wireless, now may be a good time to buy a wireless router so that you're not paying monthly service fees to a provider (ie: Verizon) just for the iPad.

Some apps are free and other's you pay for.  Most of the apps I have are the free version but once you buy them, you "own" them; no need to rebuy.  And to my knowledge, there are no monthly fees you pay for apps but I may also just not have any apps that would require such a thing to begin with.

The only thing is that you can't get Flash on Apple products so from time to time there will be a site or video you can't watch.

  • Re: memory - how many songs do you have?  I have the 16GB and that's fine for me, I have more than enough room for all my music, apps and photos. If I load up movies on it (for a flight or something) then I have to take my music off but that happens rarely so its not an issue for me. If/when DH ever gets one he'll have to get significantly more memory (his phone is 32GB and can't hold all his music.)

Mine is wireless, not 3G, and that's also been fine.  If you have a laptop in your house you probably have wireless already.  I've never needed the 3G with it to be honest.

I love love love my ipad.

  • I love my iPad. We have the original and 16GB and it is more enough to currently hold all of our music.  I don't have pictures uploaded to it, really just use it to surf the net.

Like others have said you don't need 3G if you are primarily using it at home and already have wireless internet.

  • Thanks everybody! I talked to DH - he says we do have a wireless router, but its not activated, I guess b/c we have a regular desktop PC. I would want to use it on the train, etc. so I guess I'd need 3G. Now what about security? Is the 3G encrypted? Could I make purchases w/ my credit card? Do online banking, etc.

The iPad itself is encrypted.  One of the VPs at work is leaving and I'm a close friend of hers.  I'm purchasing the office gift for her and buying her an iPad2 -64 GB because the one she currently uses is work issued.

I think the ipad is encrypted but I don't think the 3G network is encrypted.  At least I don't trust my wireless 4G card from Verizon.  We have a ipad2 - 16gb - wifi version.  I would personally activate your wireless router and use that than pay for the monthly 3G network, since that is not a unlimited download (you only have so many GB's).  You can turn off the 3G when you get home and then use the wifi but then you would still need to activate your wireless.
