There was a lot going on last night, to say the least!
I wonder if the Federal agent just happened to be at the RCA function when Nucky was shot or if someone tipped off the DOJ to the planned shooting.
I also wonder if Van Alden is going to enter into the financial arrangement (to spy on the Federal prosecutor) with Nucky or not.
I actually felt bad for Margaret when she met with her family in Brooklyn, but then she becomes unsympathetic again by sleeping with Owen. Her character is really unsavory this season, she's such the b!tch.
What was that piece of cloth on the Victrola, a dirty diaper or was it from Lucy's solo baby delivery (it was pinned with the cover sheet of "A Dangerous Maid" script)?
For those who watch, how are you liking the season so far?
Re: Boardwalk Empire, 11/6 - spoilers
I really think this season is turning out much better than last. I am liking all of the plot lines that they have going on right now.
I was wondering also about how convenient that the federal agent was there. Maybe it was because Nucky had some powerful officals there? I don't really remember.
I kind of feel bad for Jimmy. I don't think if he knew that he would have to give the order for Nucky to die that he would have signed up for this. And his relationship with his mother skeeves me out.
So did Lucy leave the baby with Van Alden since she recieved money from Nucky? I'm thinking the diaper was a "F you" since Van Alden made a comment to her about how she was enjoying the record player.
I am conflicted with Margaret. There are sometimes I really like her character but then she does something to mess it up. I was just waiting for them to walk in with an injured Nucky while her and Owen was getting it on.
Can I just say that I can listen to Owen talk all the time. I love his Irish accent!
amidavey06--I agree about Jimmy. He was really conflicted about giving the order to kill Nucky. I also think Jimmy was giving Nucky a warning at the RCA event or maybe he told the assassin not to kill Nucky, but only shoot him so as to scare him. I think if it was a good assassin, Nucky would be dead or near dead.
I also am grossed out by Jimmy's mother and her relationship with her son.
I forgot that snide comment Van Alden made about the Victrola to Lucy! It was a total "F you" to Van Alden. Yes, I believe Lucy was out of there once she got the money from Nucky. She only said those motherly comments to Nucky so she could get money from Nucky and split town. I don't blame Lucy, I can't imagine being in solitary confinement with Van Alden for 9 months was tolerable. Plus, she was furious at him for conning her to stay and have the baby with the promise of money.
I don't like how Margaret is so spiteful to her maids and nanny, like she really goes out of her way to be a jerk to these women. She was one of those women before she met Nucky. It's obvious she's had a tough life in Ireland and America, but she seems to be punishing those who have it tough too.
I think she has been an opportunist all of her life and this was revealed during the conversations with her brother. We were made to feel sorry for her during the first season, but now we are shown glimpses of how conniving and manipulative Margaret can be. Maybe this is why she and Nucky are the perfect match for each other. I hope Nucky finds out about Margaret's tryst and deals with her accordingly.
I enjoy Owen's character too. I love Richard's character as well. It's funny because they are both the hitmen of their group.
I like the new Federal prosecutor and the actress that plays her. She kicked asss in Law & Order, Criminal Intent. Looks like she'll be doing the same on BE.

If Jimmy wanted Nucky dead--and he was going to use an assassin to do it=Richard right? He's the best of the best (remember last season when he shot the guy through the eye from the window?)
I felt...sorry for Margret in this episode. It was interesting to see that everyone in her family had come to America, to achieve a new life--but they were still very, very patriarchal. Margret from the very beginning has been a bit outside the box. She has been politically active--for women's rights and prohibition--she knows what is happening in the world and she is a survivor. She IS well matched with Nucky.
I think she is constantly struggling to find out where she belongs in the world. She thought she was going to be a happy homemaker with her husband who was an abusive, controllingass; she thought she could be a mistress with Nucky, she thought she could go "home," and be an immigrant with her family...and now with Owen...I think she kinda sees that she can be a rebel who doesn't fit in. The line that Owen said at the end..about not fitting in..whether or not that was an act--you could tell it resonated with her!
Speaking of Owen, I also love him, and Richard. They are two of the best characters. Richard is one of my very, very favorites. He is an amazing good guy who does bad things.
Why has no one noticed that Mayor Bader is missing! I mean--he's the mayor..his wife isn't worried..no one at work is asking...meanwhile Eli is just...quiet. What a weirdo.
Is Van Alden just going to have to be a single dad now? That tale is full of twists and turns! I wish that he could be nicer to Lucy. They are actually kinda perfect for each other: They both are double timers--I think they would screw over anyone for money...and if Van Alden would just come clean and realize he has flaws..he'd be a lot happier.
Regarding the possibility of Richard shooting Nucky, I don't think he would ever do it. Even though he and Nucky are on opposing sides now, I think Richard is loyal to people who have shown him kindness. Nucky showed Richard such kindness, at Jimmy's behest, when they first arrived at Atlantic City. The only line Richard uttered during that meeting was "You would kill your own brother?" to Eli. I think Richard was surprised that Eli, or anyone for that matter, would kill their flesh and blood. Jimmy did not want Nucky dead and therefore did not volunteer Richard. And Richard probably did not want to see Nucky die either, or at least be the one responsible for Nucky's death.
Good point, I'm amazed no one has alerted or looked into Alderman George O'Neill's disappearance too. Eli has totally lost it. Nucky and their father are right, Eli is the idiot brother.
If Van Alden's wife leaves him for good, I think he will be a single parent. I already feel sorry for his daughter. Unless he loses the pretense of being an uber devout Christian, like you said.

I really like this season so far.
I agree Margaret is being a b!tch this season. She seems to have times where she is laid back and down to earth but then follows it up with doing something really
b!tchy. I felt bad about her family in Brooklyn too, but I understand where they are coming from. I think she meant well but her life is so different from theirs now and obviously there were a lot of issues that caused her to leave them anyway that are unresolved. I liked her little sister though, so I hope we might see more of her. I could not believe she had sex with Owen. It should be interesting to see how her relationship with Katie goes since Katie and Owen are sleeping together too. Margaret was such a sympathetic character in the beginning but she is not changing for the good.
Jimmy's mom is really creeping me out. I get that she was very young when she had him so they are not that far apart in age. But she just acts inappropriate with him sometimes. I'm not sure I want to know where what is going.
I don't think VanAlden will spy for Nucky. I think he was p!ssed that Nucky gave Lucy money because he knew she would leave. Although he might need to pay for a nanny soon so that might change things for him. That was a dirty diaper stuck to the victrola with the title page of a script called A Dangerous Maid.
I found this on Wikipedia about that script:
Most recently, the play was used analogously in the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" by a character named Lucy Danziger, played by Mar?a de la Paz Elizabeth Sof?a Adriana de la Huerta, better known as Paz de la Huerta, an American actress. Lucy, having just given birth to a baby who's father is a "white-collar" man, leaves a script of the play (to be found and read by her baby's father) as a symbol of her current mindset: That she, also being a showgirl of some sort, has realized the predicament of her having a baby with a definite future-absentee father.
i think richard asked eli the question because richard has an obsession with family. he's lost his own, and he envies others'. he keeps a scrapbook of pictures of families and "normal" life, which he longs for. he asked jimmy once, "what's it like to have it all" (paraphrased), meaning the wife and the child. i think he regards jimmy as a brother, so i think he finds it incredulous that eli would suggest murdering nucky, especially doing the job himself. i also think that even though richard is a sympathetic character, he's a nutjob.
wth, margaret? margaret strikes me as a feminist, but she lives in a time period where her options are very limited. she makes stupid decisions, though, and owen is just another bad choice. she's going to end up in the street, and he's going to end up exactly like margaret's husband. dumb. did anyone else notice nucky's wandering eye at the get together?
agent van alden seemed to make a decision while holding and trying to find a name for his baby. it looked like he had decided to reject nucky's proposal when he turned over all his info to the attorney, but i bet he's decided to take nucky up on his offer. guess we'll see!
I was a little annoyed with the Margaret/Owen hookup too. Like the pp stated, it was over the top. I know Margaret was attracted to Owen for awhile and that is part of the reason why she was so mean to Katie, but still. Maybe her dejection after seeing her family in Brooklyn caused her to make such a stupid choice so as not to feel alone. Well, wait till she hears what happened to Nucky that same afternoon.
Yes, I totally saw Nucky giving the eye to that brunette in the crowd at the RCA event.
I wonder what Van Alden will decide, but I have a feeling he will spy on the prosecutor for Nucky.
