Runners, a ?

My friend is training to run a half marathon in honor of her husband that recently passed. Before baby, I was running about 5 miles every other day, but I haven't since half way through my PG, so like 2 and a half years ago. The race is March 17th, am I crazy to think that if I started training now I could do it? I've looked at a plan online some guy came up with that gets good reivews that looks like I can do it, if I really stick with it. Am I nuts?

Re: Runners, a ?

  • Absolutely not! You have plenty of time.  I'd suggest starting slow with a few times a week for just a few miles at each time.  If you followed any of the Hal Higdon plans they wouldn't have you seriously training until January, so you have more than enough time to build up a base prior to "training."

Of course, this is coming from a sick and twisted person who ran a handful of times between April and May and decided to gut out a half-marathon the first weekend of June.

  • You'll be fine.  Do it!  I've been slacking and haven't run in a few months.  I need to sign up for my March half marathon as well so I feel motivated and committed to train.

  • you'll be fine - you can totally do it assuming you can find the time to run.

I haven't run in years, but I went from never running to runnng a marathon in > 6 months

  • Definitely. Google Hal Higdon's half-marathon plan.

Hal Higdon's half marathon plan is great. Once you can get up to running 3 miles or run/walking 4 miles I would start the novice 12 week plan- http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm

Ditto this.  I have used Hal Higdon for all my half marathons and even my marathon.  Before my first half I could barely run 2 miles.  In 12 weeks I built up to the 10 miles (top distance before half) and was able to run the entire half.

  • Thanks Ladies! I'm starting tonight! It helps that I love running in cold/cool weather.

  • Yes, you can do it. I am also a fan of Hal Higdon. I went from not running at all to running a half in 6 months. The health and fitness board is a really great support system. There are a lot of runners over there.

There will be a few challenges. Since you're coming in to winter, it will be dark, so you'll have less hours of the day to fit the run in, unless you're going to run on the treadmill. Also, being a running parent myself, you'll have to try to be dilligent about setting aside the time to run. I find that it is easy to be too busy, even for a short run. So, as long as I can force myself to ignore the easy excuses, I do better.

I love running and find it to be a great break and "me" time. I'm here if you need support or advice.

  • You can definitely do it! I think a good rule of thumb is to give yourself at least 3 months to train for a half marathon, and you're definitely there. Start out slow, doing at least 3 runs during the week and a long run on the weekend. Eventually, you'll get into such a groove you'll feel strange if you're NOT running!  Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions - I've been running marathons for the past 8 years, and I can help you with your training.
