Re: F/U Cass and others with building eye

  • I didn't vote on the other post because I couldn't decide, but...

I like #2.  I like when the garage is part of the house and blends in, instead of the garage being the first thing you see.  Totally personal preference, I know a lot of houses are built this way and people don't mind.

  • 2 and 3. The coloring of 1 is so blah. And I like how 2 and 3, the house stands out against the garage. With 1, the garage is the first thing you look at.
  • Wait, branfart, are you guys looking to buy?  If so, I missed the announcement and congrats!!!!

  • #2. I like the lines the best.

We're trying to build. We have a lot that's been empty for 2 years now. We started looking at plans, but then my health insurance changed and screwed us right after I got PG with Zac. There went our comfortable down payment on the build.

DH is convinced that we should have bought an airstream and live in that for a few years .........

We're hoping for a good winter (SNOW! SNOW!) and then we'll be ready to start building in early spring.

  • Definitely 2 or 3.  The gables (aka the triangle shaped part where the roof peaks) on those two are more attractive/balanced.  I personally prefer #3, because I think the big gable in the back balances out the weight/size of the garage the best, but I would expect #2 to be the most popular for some reason.

  • I also didn't vote in the other b/c I couldn't decide.  None would have been perfect for my use..but I don't know how you plan to use a house, kwim?  It's so personal.

I will say that I live in an older very closed off house and I hate not being able to see Jane if I'm in the kitchen.  In my next house I'll have a family room adjacent/viewable from the kitchen.

Anyway, on this, #2, definitely.  I like the brick, I like the much larger windows (sucker for light!), I like the black shutters with the brick and I like the two peaks on the roof/front.

  • I like everything about #2 including the colors.  I love red brick houses!

Cassidy, #3 is narrow house, I love the outside and I think it is why I am so torn when it comes to the inside. Could I give up function on the indoors for curb appeal on the outside??? Should be an easy answer, but right now we are use to living in a small/closed off house, all of these options are better than what we have...

This is our forever lot, and down the road we will either finish the basement or add on.

Well congrats on building up the savings again, that's so awesome!

Ok, I know you didn't ask me, but you asked Cass if you should give up function for curb appeal.  I vote NO NO NO!!!  I think you need to love how your house is laid out!!

And if you are lonely and want to do more research and opinioning for me... here is the sight for the builder we are planning to use. Has plans, alternate options, different outdoor options.

We only want a ranch. We're comfortable in the Gulfport, Bedford and Gatlinburg price range, the Montgomery, Lexington, Rockford are options but I'm just not sure I'm comfortable taking that next step.

I ended up on the site from your picture and they have lots of options!   I think their site is cool how you can toggle through all the options.

  • If you can do one of the houses where the garage is hidden from the front, I would do that. I prefer those styles so much more!

From what I've heard about building - you want to get the most usable square footage you can for the price, so break it down.  If it were me, I'd probably try to get as much as I can now b/c I feel like you can negotiate breaks now vs adding on in the future.

    I'm with Casperdy!  I don't like 1 at all.

  • I'm also for #2 with #3 as my second choice.

This exactly, but I like the brick coloring on #2 better. If exterior #3 is available in #2's brick, I'm in!

ETA: I'm a sucker for a good porch, but if #2 gives more functional floor space I'd pick it. The inside functionality trumps curb appeal in my book.
