Do you tell people you met online?

I know some people don't like to talk about the fact that they met their SO/H online/on a dating site, but I don't care at all.

As The Artist has introduced me to his friends, if they ask how we met, he tells them on OkCupid, then says, "We're a 21st-century couple, guys." I think it's cute.

Re: Do you tell people you met online?

  • My ex-h and I met when we were teens in a sports chat room. It depended on the person as to whether or not we told them how we met. Some people were open to it, some people would ask brilliant questions like "how do you know he isn't a serial killer?" Well after 5 years I'm still alive so that's a pretty good starting place...

  • I have no problem telling people we met on match.com. I don't think he minds either.

  • I just tell people we met online... I don't go into details unless I think they can handle it... We actually met playing Second Life... When I get the whole speech about how unsafe online dating is I just say "would you have rather we met in a bar where he could have slipped God knows what in my drink and done whatever he wanted with me or a place where we got to talk and get to know each other?" FYI... We skyped A LOT so there wasn't much that could be hidden lol!
  • I have never dated someone that I have meet online.  My brother met his GF online.  She is very open about it but he seemed hesitant/embarrassed to tell the family that they met online.

  • SO and I met on Zoosk. We don't broadcast it, but we don't lie of someone asks. I was hesitant about telling my dad at first, because he used to make comments about my mom when she tried online dating after they divorced. I was surprised when he was ok with it.

  • I don't mind telling people at all.  Then again, I'm probably overly honest most of the time.  I guess I feel like that's the way to dimish the stigma, I'm just honest and I embrace it :)

What's Zoosk? Never heard of it before.

  • I'm not overly forthcoming with the information but if I get asked I will tell. Some of my family members are kind of old school so I would be more apt to dodge the question though.

  • I met the guy I'm dating now on OKC and I neither of us have a problem telling people that.

  • I wouldn't have a problem with it! I met my best friend on a dating website though and that is super akward to tell people when they ask how we know each other. When I moved here and had no friends I went to plentyoffish (because it's free) and looked up the girls profiles. I would write to the girls that I thought I had a lot in common with and just say I'm new in town and looking for friends. Nobody replied except for my now, best friend. We went out for dinner and drinks which was weird like a date almost. Whenever people ask we always look at each other and feel weird and we usually say we met on facebook.
