I interviewed for a position last week and they are currently checking my references. I hate this part! What if they can't get a hold of someone on my reference list? For all I know, these people have moved on and are no longer at the old company. If a potential employer has a hard time contacting your references, what do they do? Ask you for alternates? Would this look bad or count against you?
Re: Checking your references
You listed them as references and don't even know if the contact information is valid? I think that count against you if they hear the email and/or phone number aren't valid.
You should always reach out and ask someone if they're willing to BE a reference and give them a heads up once you know or suspect they'll be contacted... which means at least semi-regularly checking in with them just to say hi. IMO

The contact information is valid. I was asking more along the lines if they try to call and can't get a hold of the person. Sure, they'd leave a voicemail, but they're not going to wait around too long for a call back.
I do keep in touch with my references (and we're connected on LinkedIn), but people can be inaccessible for a variety of reasons (vacation, illness, etc). I would have contacted them BEFORE giving their names as references, but they asked me for refs at the initial interview, which in my experience is unusual. Not to brag, but I dazzled them! lol. They want me. And I want them. The reference check, however, is something I have little control over and it freaks me out.
So...what if they can't get them on the phone or reach them?
The bolded part was what made me think you weren't in touch with them to know their status.
I think they'll leave a message, email, and move on. I don't think it's a big deal.
