Re: IHO MrsSstrug: #respectthebird poll

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans? We'll be seeing the ILs, either at their house or (hopefully) at BIL's house.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have) I must have my family's cornbread stuffing.  I'm going to volunteer to make the stuffing at the ILs this year, because I can't bear the thought of not having the kind my mom makes.

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why? I would stay home and have everyone come to us.  I hate traveling around the holidays, and I hate sharing holidays with the ILs.

  • taking Fri off and having Thanksgiving at our house, with a meal from Wegman's or Harris Teeter; it'll be us, my parents, BIL, MIL

don't really care that much about holidays and wish we could skip them all

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans? Parents and in-laws will arrive Wed.- we'll have a simple, quick meal and just relax. We'll hopefully eat semi-early on Thursday (it always ends up being a little later than planned), then play games in the evening. Not sure if we'll do any Black Friday shopping- depends on what the stores have and everyone's moods. My mom's going to make wedding soup while she's here (my favorite of hers), so I'm pretty excited about that.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have) My mom's green bean dish (beans, onions, tomato, and oregano- simple but delish). This is my must-make seasonal drink: http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/Harvest-Apple-Cider

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why? Wouldn't change a thing- I like that both of our parents are coming to us.
  • We're going to my aunt and uncle's house in Virginia. They are amazing cooks and they love to entertain.

I need stuffing. It doesn't have to be a particular recipe, but I LOVE stuffing!

    I don't want anything different. I <3 Thanksgiving.

  • my parents are coming to visit us. They came last year but I am especially looking forward to it this year. at 8mo PG I can sit back and let them help with more of the cooking than I would if my ILs were coming. Plus I know that with my parents cooking, it'll still taste exactly the way I want it.

I'm with WnW, I love me some stuffing. Seriously, for 4 people there will be two types of stuffing and they better both be extra big batches to allow plenty for leftovers.

I wish we could do Thanksgiving 2x a year so I could do one holiday with all my traditional recipes (because it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without them) and one day would be new recipes. I always enjoy the Bon Appetit Thanksgiving issue but I never want to mess with tradition by making the "creole turkey" or whatever fun things they highlight.

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans? we'll be touring wineries and eating jamon in spain this year! can't wait!!

recipe that you absolutely have to make?(or seasonal fave that you must have) no matter where we are, if it's a traditional thanksgiving dinner then mashed potatoes are a must. last christmas i fell in love with pioneer woman's mashed potatoes. fantastic and you can make them the day before. if we're home, i have to make mulled cider & port.

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why? this year, i would not change a thing but ask me this question about christmas and it will be a different story ;)

  • We'll be staying in town and going to my brother's house--I volunteered him to host this year. We'll be off midday Wednesday through Sunday, just enjoying our time off and spending it as a family with DS. Probably sleeping and eating a lot of leftovers.

We absolutely have to have this awesome giblet cream gravy that I make every year (it is seriously SO GOOD), and pumpkin bars. I think my brother and DH would disown me if I didn't make them. This is besides the usual turkey/stuffing/mashed potatoes/etc.

If we could be doing something different, we'd be going up to Maine. A lot of my extended family goes up there for Thanksgiving weekend and they all get together at my uncle's big house right on the water for a family meal. I've done it before and it was really fun, but it's too hard to do now with a little one.

  • We go to my parents house in Howard Co.

    My moms crescent rolls

I would veto cranberry jello salads.  I think they are so old fashioned but my mom just has to have it.

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans?

We're cooking/ hosting.  Then Black Friday shopping.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have)

    Cranberry relish!

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why?

I don't know, I guess visit families-  it'd be nice just to be able to go spend a day with them.  I did not like going out to eat for Thanksgiving (which we did last year because we were headed away on vacation).

    - Teaching a yoga workshop in the morning, then heading to the in-laws for the big day.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have)

    - Spiced Apple Pie.  Creamed onions.  And new, as of Christmas last year: potato gratin with rosemary crust.  YUM.

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why?

     - I wish my BIL/SIL were coming.  He just got assigned to a job in Taiwan, so they aren't coming back for Thxgvg.  It's much nicer to have them around than have it just be us and my in-laws.

Alternatively, I'd just go to my parents house :)

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans? Going to see "The Muppets" the night before Thanksgiving (been counting this down for like a year, LOL!), hosting Otto's family for a potluck Thanksgiving, and traveling to PA Friday-Sunday to see family and attend my 20th reunion.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? Stuffing! It's not Thanksgiving without stuffing. And don't forget if you love stuffing get yourself to Great Harvest Bread Company and get a few loaves of their "stuffing bread" - it's bread ... that tastes just like stuffing! Heaven!!!
if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why? Last year and back in 2006, we went to Jamaica for Thanksgiving. I hope we'll do it again in the future. So awesome to have a stress-free holiday and enjoy it with nobody but each other.

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans?

Going to my sister's in PA and DH's family is coming over there just for the afternoon.  It sure beats them all coming to my house and staying for 4 days (and I have to feed them all the whole time)

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have)
I love these green beans and I only make them at the holidays so they are my own must have.

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why?
When the kids are a little older it might be nice to travel somewhere on vacation and take a break right before the busy Christmas time.  As far as meals, I would take ham or lamb over turkey sometimes but that's a no go from the rest of the family.

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans? We will be traveling to PA to see our families.  I dread it because the trip is always so tiring and the boys sleep horribly, but it will be good to see everyone.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have) When I cook, I make apple-cider-brined turkey, braised fennel, mashed potatoes, herbed stuffing, butternut squash gratin, cranberry-ginger relish, brussels sprouts with bacon... mmmmm.

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why? When my kids are older I'd love for us all to volunteer at a community center or something.
    ? ?????????????????????????????????????????
  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans? Having a few friends over for turkey day, not sure about the rest of the weekend. We'll probably do the lights on the outside of our house, and I usually set up my Christmas village over the weekend.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have) the apple pie my mom has been making my whole life

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why? I wish we could go to NC to see my family, or that some of our family could come here.
  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans? My parents come in for the holiday weekend, and I will cook for them and my FIL.  The rest of the weekend will be all about letting the grandparents play with DD and maybe (if I'm lucky) getting some quiet time to sit and read a book in peace.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have) The stuffing my aunt always made.  It's just boring ol' bread and sage stuffing from the Betty Crocker cookbook circa 1952, but it tastes like Thanksgiving.  Assuming I have time, I generally make an apple pie too.  Most people don't make them with enough spices for my taste, so it's generally the only time I get to eat any.

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why? Get someone else to help me cook?  Occasionally I get my Dad and DH involved at the last minute, but except when we celebrate with my BFF and she cooks half the meal, I'm doing it all by myself and it's a lot of work.

  • I'm medically restricted from travel.  My SIl lives in the area, but I'm trying to keep my stress down so we passed on their invitation.  We're having a few friends over who would otherwise be alone (husband in Afghanistan, etc.)

  • what are your turkey day/weekend plans?  My plans are still up in the air.  My parents might be coming down, or I'll be going to kiahj's :)  DH has to work.

recipe that you absolutely have to make? (or seasonal fave that you must have)   Pumpkin cheesecake.  It is not Thanksgiving without it.

if you could do something different for thanksgiving, what would it be? why?  I would love for DH to home, but it doesn't really matter what we do, I just want him to not have to work every freaking holiday :(
