I went to the polls this moring and voted the way I usually do -- selected my choice for the state ballot questions and then filled in the bubbles for all of the uncontested Sanford elections. The contested ones I left blank because I have no idea who any of these people are or what they stand for.
Re: I'm a bad voter
I don't think that makes you a bad voter. I think it makes them bad for not getting out and going door to door and letting the voters know who they are.
#1- You voted, that's a plus in your corner to start. If nothing else, you exemplified good citizenship to Helen.
#2- Better to not choose anyone, rather than someone because you think you should who turns out to be a royal disaster and you just didn't figure that out ahead of time. I too left a couple of contested spots unvoted.
#3- I'm only a step up from you in terms of preparedness. While I gave all the questions thought, the whole Portland mayoral race with 15 candidates was just way too much to digest in the 24 hours I gave myself to "get educated." I ended up going with the person who came to my door and spoke with us for 15-20 minutes and who's website info seemed logical. I can't honestly say I had the right amount of info to make the BEST decision, though I don't think my decision was a flat out poor one. I gave my top candidates' sites a 5 minute look over (aka I read their "vision" pages) and wrote a quick cheat sheet so I'd remember what I crammed in literally 15 minutes before getting in the car.
I'm worse. I read the last names of the people - remembered hearing both last names on kids at school and chose the person with the last name of the least annoying child - and I have no idea if the people on the ballot are even related to the children.
