Weekend trips/dog-friendly

I figured I would through this out to you all just in case...

DH wants us to go on a short weekend trip after Thanksgiving this year. He wants to go somewhere we've never been together (so nix Eureka Springs and Dallas/Ft. Worth), within a 4 or 5-hour drive, and it has to be dog-friendly since we're bringing the pooch.

I found this amazing B&B in southeastern Oklahoma that takes dogs and looks wonderful, but it's $250 a night, which is slightly out of the budget at the moment. I found a guest ranch down there that also has a cabin that takes dogs, but... well, yeah. Not super excited.

Anyone have any thoughts? I've looked everywhere, and even places that do take dogs only take 25-pound-or-under dogs or require them to be crated when we're not in the room (we don't have a crate and would never consider this an option anyway).

At this point I'm sort of leaning towards Hot Springs, though DH seems to feel that drive is too far. This whole thing is starting to stress me out. So I need help.

  • I don't know if you're into camping at all, but if H and I were going to take a dog-friendly weekend trip, we'd go to the Talimena National Scenic Byway. We'd probably take our VW bus to camp in, but we've tent camped out there, and it's fun too. The scenery is really gorgeous - so much prettier than OKC. We like to camp at Cedar Lake, but there are several spots to choose from around there.

  • We rented a really nice cabin down at Beaver's Bend one year that allowed our dog. I will try to find the info if you want.

    That would be great! Thanks!

McG, I thought about pulling out the tent, but I'm afraid the weather in late November might not be conducive to camping. We may wait until the spring for that.

Okay, I just went through my old stuff and found the website. The owner used to have 6 cabins, but it looks like he's just down to one big one, so you're probably no interested (4 beds). Sorry!!

  • I recommend Beavers Bend also. H & I went there for our 1 year anniversary we stayed in the hotel that overlooks the lake (beautiful views but b/c of the location of our room, next to where they piled the trash daily and the furnace/electrical room wouldn't really want to stay at the hotel again) There are lots of cabins down there that I looked at and some allow dogs so I would see if you can find a smaller cabin that allows dogs to stay in. I used the travelok website when I was looking.

Let us know what you decide, when H gets back I want to plan a weekend getaway for us and it would be nice to take our dogs since we usually find a sitter for them.
