Job question?

Ok this is going to sound very weird but I can't seem to word it right. How does the whole job thing work with moving from base to base? I keep applying for jobs but of course no reply. Now I am going to try to see what this military spouse placement program will do. Have any of you used one before? If so how well did it work? Also I was told that the base HRO will help place me. Is that true? If so exactly how does that work? Sorry in advance if I spelled something wrong. Thanks in advance! I hope you all have a great day!

Re: Job question?

  • I have not used a spouse placement, but it sounds like a good idea. I just apply. I've gotten jobs at everything from banks, clothing stores, childcare and now a Dr. Office. Unfortunately when we move I'll have to resign and start the process all over again. Just kind of comes with the lifestyle.

  • It depends on your base. Our AF base has very limited job opportunities because of hiring freezes, they also don't have anything for placement in the community. Basically they have job fairs for Veterans and those retiring.

It's my understanding that the Spouse Preference program puts your application at the top of the list, but that is about it. You have to have a copy of your H's orders and apply for the program.

I would use this site to find your base and see what they have available. (http://www.nafjobs.org/) The only way your job would transfer from base to base is if you got a federal job. They are extremely competitive because it's very hard for those agencies to fire/terminate employees.

I think the only thing the "placement program" is, is an office with a list of jobs you can apply for.

Spousal preference just gets your resume pushed to the top of the list for viewing, but it doesn't give you a guaranteed interview if you're not what they're looking or or lacking the skills or requirements they're asking for.

This, but there are people higher than spouses on the preference list like Veterans. I never had any luck with jobs on base so I always looked (& found) off base.

  • I feel like finding a job anywhere is hopeless. I just don't have the job experience they want or need. I am great with children and have yet to try to find a job with children. That is because I really do not have a clue how to go about looking for a place that is hiring child care providers. Yes this is where my youth comes to front

Craigslist, the newspaper, & the base website will all list job openings. Most childcare places won't hire someone without substantial experience so you might try for something like food service or retail to start out with.

Have you ever had a job?

  • Not with a company. I was a live in babysitter for six months, babysat three different chidren for almost two years before that. Also I helped family clean houses when I was really young.

I'm not trying to be snarky, but were you the one with the brother drama? Were you a live-in nanny for someone other than family? While babysitting cousins, nieces & nephews give you experience it generally isn't the experience a potential boss is looking for.

  • Yes I am. I was never a nanny to any family. I refuse to watch any of my cousins or whatevers children. It was a lady my oldest brother (not the brother that I had all the problems with) knew. All the other children I watched had nothing to do with my family.
  • Okay, well that's good at least. You can also sign up on sittercity or care dot com to apply for child care positions.

  • Have you looked into volunteering to get job experience? I've had jobs before but none in administrative work so I started volunteering with the Red Cross to gain experience and just to get out of the house.

Why don't you look into college or a trade school?

This and at least if you want to nanny or babysit, I'd suggest a CPR and First Aid certification.

  • I would love to attend some form of college further my education. However Louisiana school system screwed me over because I was a sickly child. Seriously got kicked out of school for nothing that I nor my family could fix. So I have a very low education level in the publics eyes. I have been trying to learn what is needed for a G.E.D. I basicly taught myself. I didnt even think that was considered job experience.

There are classes you can enroll in that will help you get a G.E.D with the help of a trained professional.

  • Oh wow. I didn't even know any of that was possible. I was kicked out of school in literally the sixth grade. Do any of you know if that will hold me back from getting a G.E.D. or will I have to go about getting a diploma a different way? I have been trying contact the Louisiana school board to ask these questions but get absolutely nowhere. You ladies have really helped! Thank you so much.
  • It shouldn't hold you back. If you go either the education office on post or a local community college and ask about GED programs or continuing education classes they can point you in the right direction. They'll probably be more helpful than calling straight up the Louisiana School Boards.

  • Yes ma'ma. Truency came six weeks into the 2005 school year and told me I no longer could attend public schooling in Louisiana. I was influencing other children to not want to attend school and that it was ok to skip school. I have not one clue as to how they came to that. I had excuses for everyday missed from doctors except one day.
  • imageKiller Cupcake:
They don't have continuation schools in Louisiana?
I in all honesty do not know what that is. They have a "private school" aka pay for your diploma. I went for a couple months doing all the work they would give me trying to get as much knowledge as I could from it. They were shut down by the school board because of not turning in the work the students were supposed to be doing

A continuation school is a public school for kids who have been kicked out of regular public schools. Also called "opportunity schools".

Or alternative schools in some areas.

  • They have something called the Career Center. I was not eligable for that school they didnt give a reason why. I know the school was open then I knew people that went to it. I believe that the only way you were sent to that school was if you could be rehabilitated or something like that. At least thats what the girl said that went there. Nothing in my crazy life makes sense. I am sorry for wasting your time ladies. Thanks for your advice. If you would like to know anything else I will be glad to answer.

You aren't wasting anyone's time, and I think people here would be glad to help you figure things out. I'm sorry that you didn't get to finish school, and if you want to private message me, I would be happy to see what I can do to help you find educational options in your area if I can. I'm pretty good at finding info online.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
