Poll: Advice to Give

You have an older daughter in high school... What is one thing you would suggest that she do differently based on your experience when it comes to these two subects: Relationships and Money.

They don't necessarily have to be things that you regret, just things that you would do differently the second time around.

Happiest place on Earth!

Re: Poll: Advice to Give

  • (A) Get married later in life

    (B) Start contributing to a 401K the day you get your first real job at a minimum max out what your company matches.  If you don't you're giving away free money!

  • Relationships: You are the only you, don't be pressured to change for the sake of having a guy like you, it will never work out.

Money: Credit cards are not the same as money. Even if you get it for the intention of building credit, only purchasing things like gas and groceries, and paying it off every month ... it never works that way.

Totally agree with your B!! I am so thankful that when I started here (at 18), that on my one year anniversary (when you become eligible in my company to contribute) the CEO came to me and said, "Amanda, I want you to sign up for this," and then proceeded to explain to me what a 401K was, because no one else had before.

Not sure about your A though. ;)

  • (A) I am always here for you to talk about this.  I know you need to learn some lessons the hard way, but please understand that any advice I give you comes from a place of love and wanting the best for you...its not because I just don't like that boy.

    (B) A lot of your friends, teachers, guidance counselors, etc. will be talking up fancy private schools.  Trust me, they are probably not worth it.  I'm still paying on my student loans (God, I hope this doesn't turn into truth) and I went to public schools.  I can't imagine how much of a headache private school loans would be.  Just get a degree in a practical field and the jobs will follow.  Also, you will have a job in college, and you will still get to go out and have fun, I swear.

Totally agree with the relationship advice.

Regarding money...save! Whether it be in a basic savings account or starting your retirement fund, just SAVE.

  • Relationships: Make the best choices and decisions in your life for you, not for a boy! And do not change for anyone, a boy will love you for who you are, not what you could be.

Money: use credit cards wisely, basically emergencies only, and ditto what others said about contributing to 401k as soon as you get your job so you are used to that money missing.

I love everything that everyone else has said so far, but these were more or less the first things that came to my mind.

  • Relationships- You only need a handful of REAL friends. The others will come and go, don't waste your worries on them.

Money- You'll always have to work hard to never have enough. Plan for the future, but enjoy life.

    Ditto all of this!!

  • Relationships: I would tell her that I'm glad me and her father worked out but get out there and date around a lot more if you can :)

Money: I agree with credit cards. My parents gave me the same advice but man, sometimes it was unavoidable in college.

  • Relationships: Date a lot. Don't settle down with one boy. I'm not advocating promiscuity (sp?) but I think it's good to date when you are young.

Money: Credit cards are evil. Start investing as soon as you possibly can!

  • I loved how Ranger said it: Do not change for anyone, a boy will love you for who you are, not what you could be.

    And I would add...

Relationships: True love does exist so never settle for anything less. There will be tough times and having your best friend by your side will make the bad seem better and good seem even sweeter.

Money: Money does not grow on trees :) You work hard for your money and you want your money to work hard for you. Invest, save, save and treat yourself to something once in a while.
