Objectives on Resume? Yay or nay?

What's the general consensus whether to have a objective on a resume? I like to think no but DH seems to think it's necessary for his resume, he's in sales right now but looking for career change.

Everytime I've seen an objective I either think that they are blantently obvious (yes I know you want a job hence the resume or provides no additional/useful information to resume). What do you think?

Re: Objectives on Resume? Yay or nay?

  • I have never included a career objective on my resume. Like you said, they're pretty obvious (yes, of course you want a challenging career in X industry where you can utilize your X skills.) To me, they scream "Newbie straight out of college with no experience."

However - if your DH is looking to change industries or careers, it does make sense to give a brief explanation of what provoked the sudden change of course and how he thinks he could transfer his skills to this new role. I would include a brief discussion of this on the cover letter, however.

I loathe objectives on the resume.

  • Generally speaking, nay. It can be helpful when the candidate is fresh out of school and has no experience summary to provide, or in cases like your DH's, where they're looking to change fields. But in that case I think it can still be better explained in a CL.

  • You are correct - the objective of your resume is to land you a job.  There is no need to state the obvious.

What you might consider including is a summary section at the top that highlights your key skills and experience. 3-4 sentences usually would suffice.

  • I don't have an objective, but I did add 3 bullet points up top called "summary of qualifications". I wasn't changing fields but wanted to highlight the fact that my experience qualifies me for several types of jobs within my field (accounting).

I did this mainly because at my last 2 employers I had the same job title and, although if they read the detailed job description they could see the varied accomplishments, I wanted something up top in case they were only scanning the resumes.

  • An objectives section says "I don't have enough stuff to put on my resume, so let me add this useless section in order to fill some space."
