So excited for a haircut today & a question

I bought a Groupon for a place on Newbury St. a while ago and am cutting it close with using it before it expires.  I'm curious to see if they treat Groupon customers differently from "regular" customers.

Now for the question part.  Do you usually have a specific idea of what you want when you go into salon and give the stylist instructions?  Or are you more about letting the pro figure out what will work on you?  Something in between?

Re: So excited for a haircut today & a question

  • I've never used a Groupon so I can't give you any advice there. Have fun though! I bet a salon on Newbury is great!

I usually go in knowing what I want, whether it is a certain style or length, etc. If it is a style I'll usually bring a picture since that is easier than explaining it.

  • I wouldn't even present it until you pay. Why would they treat you any differently? I think they will expect you to tip according to regular prices.

I always go in with very specific instructions because my hair is my security blanket and I am totally neurotic about it.

  • I've never used a Groupon before.  I hope they would give you good service to encourage you to come back and pay full price next time!

I usually tell the stylist more or less what I want.  I know what does not work on my hair so if they suggest it I tell them no.  I do not spend a lot of time on my hair every day and I tell them that so they won't give me a cut that needs to be styled to look right.

  • GL!

For me, it depends on the time I'm going. Sometimes I have a specific thing in mind (hairstyle to show, idea of what kind of layers/color I want). Other times I just go in and say, "Have at it."

The last time I got a cut, I told her I wanted her to fix the disaster the previous stylist had done, and I told her I had a long-term plan to donate it next fall, so I had a plan in mind for the next several cuts. Ditto for color: I had experience in what I wanted, and told her to work within that to whatever she thought would look good.

This. I saw a sign at Fred & Steves that said something like Please let your server know immediately if you will be using a groupon.
My hair is the same way. It's straight, that's it. It does not curl, ever. My only instructions to the stylist is that I need to be able to put it in a ponytail.

  • Interesting responses.  I actually rarely go in with a specific idea and almost always let them have at it.  At most I'll give guidance on length preference, but that's usually it.

I'm trying to grow my hair back out after having had it short for a little while now.  I'm curious to see what they can do without hacking a lot off.

And don't worry, I always tip on the regular, full amount :)

    Ditto this.

I never go in with any idea of what I want, lol.  I generally just tell the stylist to give me a style that works whether I wear my hair straight or curly and then trust they know better than I do. No horror stories. I'm pretty laid back about my hair though, especially since it grows like a weed.

This pretty much describes me exactly.

I already told them I had a Groupon when I made the appointment (wasn't sure if I needed to mention it and I just did it w/o thinking). We'll see how it goes.

  • I'm not the type who is super attached to my hair. I have had bad cuts and colors (in college one of my friends went to Paul Mitchell and used me as her at-home guinea pig), and it always grows out.

I go to the same hairdresser every cut and kind of let her do her own thing. She asks how long I want it and asks my opinion as she goes, but I never have very specific instructions for her.

I've never used a groupon, but I would present it first. I know with restaurant.com, they need to call in and confirm the coupon so they like to do it first.

  • So the haircut went fine and the stylist (who is also the owner) was great.  I was a little nervous because if memory serves someone reviewed him negatively on Yelp, but I know you can't always trust the opinions you find there.

Not much of a change but I expected that since I didn't want to lose a lot of length.  He just cleaned me up a bit and I'd go back to him again when I'm ready for the next snip.

Oh, and every salon should have massaging shampoo chairs!
