We're doing the standard travel insurance so that covers death/illness/disruptions/etc. The tour company offers additional insurance for $30/person that allows you to cancel your tour - for any reason - up to 24 hours before and get a full refund. (It doesn't cover everything - just the tour itself.)
I think it's brilliant and if we're already spending so much, we might as well tack it on. It's a year away and who knows what will happen in the next year. (And God forbid Italy implodes into some kind of chaos over all this debt mess, like Greece is.)
M's on the other end of the spectrum. He says we would never cancel for a reason that's not already covered by the other issurance so it's a waste of $60.
What kind of insurance do you get when you travel? What do you think about this $60-and-cancel-whenever option?
Re: Travel Insurance
We usually go with whatever the travel agent recommends. I think we usually get the "cancel for any reason" insurance. In this case, I would spend the $60. In the scheme of things, and compared to what I'm sure the trip is costing you, it's very low-cost. Also, when you say the standard insurance covers death, whose does it cover? Just yours or M's? I always tell my H, I don't want to have to make a choice between missing a trip I've been looking forward to AND losing all of the money we've spent and missing my grandparent's/parent's/sibling/other important person's funeral, etc... Also, what if (God forbid) one of you lost your job in the next year. Would you still be comfortable spending this amount of money on a trip?
Which tour did you guys end up deciding on? I'm so excited for you, you're going to have a great time!
We're doing the Globus one that does Rome, Venice, Florence, Nice and Paris. And we're going to stay a few extra days at the end to do Disney.

For $60, I'd do it. Especially since you are probably spending a significant chunk on the trip. You never know what might come up.
That being said, I usually don't go for that extra insurance, because for the most part it would have to be something quite major (i.e., family death or illness) that would cause me to not go on a trip like that.
