Guess how much a pack of cigarettes costs in Norway

Re: Guess how much a pack of cigarettes costs in Norway

  • How much does a pack cost in the US?

I will not take this poll to mean that you have taken up smoking whilst in Norway as a way to pass the time, because it sounds like it would likely be costly.

  • I bought a pack for MIL.

    $15....Holy f@$1ing s*&t!

No idea what it costs in the US (though it definitely varies by state).

the last time I bought a pack in NYC it was $20. But I bought them at a bar (I quit years and years ago but sometimes slip while drinking...)

Actually, my friend got a pack in Edinburgh and it was like ?8 I think?

  • Wow! (here is just under 5?!)
  • Are there lots of smokers in Norway? (I don't remember)

In Russia a pack costs less than a dollar. Everyone smokes.

Curious if the massive cost is truly a deterrent.

  • Before I saw your answer I was going to say ?15 equivalent (before I saw dollar too...) so I overstated a bit...  I think they are around ?9 here (not a smoker so not sure!)

Eh, it's hard to tell without knowing national statistics.

I can tell you that many more people snus (chew) here than in the US, though.  Even girls do it!  Regularly!  They have pretty pink packaged, wih pre-portioned packed that are easy to use.

Cost has to be a deterrent.  It just has to be.  Though with alcohol (an equally outrageous price) I wouldn't say it deters one bit.

  • How the hell do people afford it?

I asked the Philadelphia knotties since they are on the boarder of several states.  They came back with $5.45 (DE) to $10 in NY.  NJ, MD, and PA were around $8.

  • The ones that DH smokes are ?6.32 per pack here. They're a bit more in Edinburgh.

  • MA has pretty high taxes on them. They're $7-8 here. I think in GA it was more like $4 (not sure since I don't smoke, that's just what I've seen on signs advertising them at gas stations and stuff).
  • That would explain why my friend had me bring her ciggies from Duty Free when I went to visit her in Oslo a few years ago.  That's crazy expensive.

From what I saw from her and her friends, everyone was smoking--hell, I even smoked one cig when I was there!

  • I don't totally remember how much a pack is in Switzerland. But it's not cheap and the price never seemed to be a deterrent in Z?rich at least. They would literally light up a minute before a tram would come puff twice and then throw it in the rails.

Like Mint mentioned, duty free.  The duty free shop upon arrival at Norwegian airports are a mad house.

Also: Sweden.  Booze and cigarettes are probably half price, and only a 1 hour drive from where we are.

  • They are ?8 for a 10 pack here.

Something is a deterrent because the proportion of the population that smokes has definitely decreased over the last 10 years or so.  But it could also be due to new rules about where you can smoke and more emphasis on the health-related side effects.

Rita: have you heard that it is apparently also starting to become "harry" to smoke?

It depends on the brand and the quality of the cigarette. It's around 7 CHF a decent pack of someone's flagship brand. The cheapos that will burn your throat are around 5 CHF, the super high end luxury brands like Davidoff are around 12.  I don't smoke.  I just know this.

Wise_Rita, can I ask what brand they were?

Good!  Smoking needs all the bad connotations surrounding it that we can give it.

    Prince.

Also, I didn't realize until today that MIL smokes a pack of these a day.

  • They're expensive here too and it is not a deterrent, nor are the signs taking up half the pack saying 'SMOKING WILL KILL YOU'. But once they finally passed laws against smoking indoors, the Danish population that smokes went below 25% for the first time. I pink puffy sparkle heart that law. It was just nasty to go anywhere before.
