Dumb Punctuation Question

I am normally on top of this, but now that I am about to place an order, I am doubting myself.

For a personalized address stamp would it be

The Smith's or The Smiths

Re: Dumb Punctuation Question

  • The Smiths

    Smith's is possessive.

  • I avoid that question altogether...

    The Smith Family

I know The Smith's is not right, wouldn't it be The Smiths'

  • It would be The Smiths

but, if you want to avoid the s, I usually get my cards with "The Smith Family" put on them, just so people don't confuse an s at the end of our name.

Smiths' is still possessive - it's just plural (several Smith families all together)

I think I will just do:

    Smith or The Smith Family

    I suck at punctuation.

  • I always do The Smith Family.  Our last name ends with an S so I always put from "The ****s Family" instead of The ****s'.

I always do The _______ Family but then since our last name ends in S already, it's even weirder.

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.

Yeah, I like The Smith Family too.

Making names plural is difficult.  For example, say our last name is Candy, we have gotten cards that say Candies instead of Candys.  Always makes me laugh.

  • I was a rebel and did The Smiths.  Our last name is 7 letters and our street is 3 words, so I needed to conserve space.

    thanks!

  • The Smiths would be what I'd do.

I guess technically it could be The Smiths' if you were intending for it to imply "The Smiths' house," but I think The Smiths makes more sense...just pluralizing to imply the individuals in the family as a unit.

Yes. If you were talking about the Smiths' house where several Smiths lived, as opposed to just Mr. Smith's house, where only Mr. Smith lives.

Me too.  Jones...Joneses...Jones'....I just try to avoid these altogether and go with Jones Family.
