Adopting a family/child for the holidays?

When I lived in another state our school paired up with a lower income school and adopted families.  There was a big board and people just pulled cards off the board with various items listed that the family requested.  DH & I loved buying clothes and toys for the family.  Does anyone know of a program like this in Omaha?

    That was easy!  Thanks!!

  • Also (may have been stated above), Star 104.5 does a phone-a-thon to adopt families of various sizes.  It usually occurs Dec 1 & 2.
  • While the intent and delivery of this program is great, the name is so upsetting.  "Adopt"ing anyone or anything means it's for life, not just for Christmas.  It means making the person/animal part of your permanent family.  Same thing with "adopting" a zoo animal.  How does something like this make an adopted child feel?  Like they're a charity case?  They're temporary?  My angry is gettin' all ramped up!  :)

agreed, your Angry is misplaced. I hear you, I do, but this is not a big deal.

FWIW, I don't support the Salvation Army as they have some VERY discriminatory practices toward same-sex partners of employees, hiring of gay employees, etc.

No red bucket for me, thanks.

Perhaps the WCA (formerly YWCA) or your church community would have some recommendations for a family in need?

    Anything in Lincoln?

  • The Ralston Jaycee's adopt 3 families from the Ralston School District and place the needs of the family at the local Baright Library in downtown Ralston the week of Thanksgiving.  I help keep the tradition going and would love the support ;-)
