Maryland DMV fail

My insurance notified me today that my license number can't be verified with the state, and that Maryland has no record of my license number... What?? This is bad because if I get pulled over or in an accident it will appear that I have a fake license. We double checked all the numbers in Progressive's files and they are listed correctly. I was told to go to the DMV to fix it... but no one there knows what to do. I'm very frustrated.

Re: Maryland DMV fail

  • surely the dmv ought to be able to search by the number on your license and see what their records show... and likewise by your last name. is it possible your license expired and you forgot to renew it?

they also should be able to run your tags/vehicle registration and i think that might also reference your DL number.

  • I renewed my license in person 2 weeks ago. Insurance suggested they accidentally deleted me in the process (which sounds bogus, and I've never heard of) I don't have a car registered to me, so that route doesn't work. This is all laughably ridiculous.
  • The Maryland DMV had no idea what to do when I changed my name and they spelled it wrong and it needed to be corrected.  Guess what?  They couldn't do that?  Needless to say it took me emailing the governor to get anything done. Yeah, that's a story for another day...

Nope, that actually happens.  Completely ridiculous.

    Good luck getting it resolved!

  • Why is the DMV so incompetent? And it seems to be all DMVs in all states. It's like a magnet for incompetence and beaurocracy gone wrong.

  • When I moved to MD, I was in a catch-22 - I couldn't get MD insurance without a MD driver's license, and they wouldn't issue me a driver's license without insurance. So I ended up taking my insurance agent to the DMV so I could get them simultaneously. Totally ridiculous.

I would return to the DMV (not just the license express) with all your paperwork and every time you hit a dead end, ask for the supervisor until it gets resolved in your favor. I'm so sorry for this pointless trouble.
