MIL decided to cancel Christmas

So, I was texting with my MIL today since she is coming over on Friday, and I needed to know what time (she called DH yesterday, but he forgot derp).  Anyway, got the details yada yada yada and she tells me she doesn't want to do Christmas this year because she has no time off.

That's totally fine because we usually spend Christmas w/ my family and either go up north to see her before or after.  There's a big gift exchange, etc.  I asked if she wanted to do it in January so that she could still see DH (and her daughters) and feel like she had a Christmas.  She wasn't interested!

I'm just surprised because I could NEVER go w/o Christmas.  I LOVE seeing my family and being all cozy with everyone at that time of year.  Presents don't really matter, but they are nice.

I guess she is a little nutters.  Probably just needs a break.  I just think it's kind of weird.

That got long.  Here's some cake:

Re: MIL decided to cancel Christmas

  • I'm with you, I cannot imagine not getting together with my family at Christmas.  However, I wouldn't be surprised if my MIL did this.  Is your DH upset about it?
  • Nah, DH doesn't really care.  He's pretty detached from his family.  He likes them and gets along with them, but he doesn't usually go out of his way to spend time with them.

I'm not too upset because MIL drives me kinda nuts, but I'm still kind of disappointed.  *shrug*

  • I can understand being disappointed.

I am very close to my family but I really wish I was closer to my MIL and SIL.  I just saw my MIL last weekend (for her b-day) and that was the first time since March (DH's b-day) and we only live about 20 minutes apart.

  • Unless you know that your MIL isn't really into holidays, I would dare to guess that there is something bigger going on.  Just cancelling Christmas is weird to me.

I thought the same thing - I wonder if something else is up. Maybe they are having financial issues or something? Perhaps it's worth suggesting just getting together without the usual big gift exchange?

As much as my MIL drives me batty (and sometimes I wish she would cancel Christmas lol) but truly, I can't imagine not seeing them at the holidays.

  • That sounds a little crazy!  But in her defense, my MIL and FIL are not doing Christmas this year either... They are traveling to Germany for the week before Christmas and decided it would just be too stressful to try to shove Christmas in after they get back. I'm a little disappointed about it, but what can you do?

  • One side of my family has finally done away with any presents at Christmas, but we still get together. My sister and I are still trying to get my mom's side to do this to no avail. I could totally skip the shopping and presents part, but I would still like to get together. Maybe she is having trouble getting gifts for everyone?

  • I doubt it's related to their finances.  MIL's nickname is "moneybags" lol!  She's the kind of person who buys a car and pays the full amount in cash.  She purchased, and I mean PURCHASED her home.  *shrug* but maybe they are struggling.

I suggested w/o presents, too.  Maybe she just needs a break.  I think she's going through some personal stuff right now.  She moved up to Manistee about 4 years ago.  One of her daughters is up there (the one she doesn't get along great with) while her other daughter and son (my DH) are down here.  I think she misses being here and might want to move back (especially when DH and I have kids).  But, I would think if she missed them so badly she'd want Christmas even more.

*shrug*  Maybe I'll get some answers out of her when she visits this weekend.
