Business Casual/Professional People

What do you wear on a normal work day? My office is business casual and most days I'm more on the casual side. I have some birthday money and combined with some coupons and rewards checks I'm planning on shopping for new work clothes this weekend.

One of my 30 Before 30 goals is to improve my wardrobe. I thought a good place to start would be the clothes I wear 5 days per week. If you were going shopping for a new work wardrobe what would you buy?

Re: Business Casual/Professional People

  • I went to The Limited yesterday for work clothes. I got 2 new pairs of Drew Fit flare trousers, a shell that I'm wearing today under a cardigan belted. A short sleeve shirt that I will wear under cardigans or blazers and a dress.

I pretty much get all my work clothes from there.

  • A few pairs of well-fit dress slacks (I prefer black and grey and maybe brown), tops with nicer material and sturdy but cute pumps are good.  I try (tried - lol) to make sure I was using cardigans or nice sweaters instead of fleece's or hoodies when in the office.  Some fun jewelry can jazz up an outfit too.

  • I think I need shells and cardigans or maybe a blazer. I'm pretty good on pants and skirts right now.

For example, today I'm wearing nice black pants (my go-to bottom half look), black wedge heels and a blue cotton 3/4 sleeve shirt from Gap. I feel like I have the beginning of a nice outfit but it's not complete.

  • That is good!  Try fun necklaces and earrings to dress up an outfit.  I went through a long necklace phase but now they just look silly because they just sit right on my tummy.  lol

  • I do need to accessorize more. I own very little jewelry. I wear the same thing every day,  small diamond stud earrings and my wedding ring. I'm very boring.

  • Slacks, pencil skirts, shells, cardigans, blazers....

  • The Loft is having their F&F sale with 40% off right now. Wink

I complete my outfits with jewelry and cardigans.  I always feel more put together with nice accessories and a sweater.

  • I'm really getting into sweaters and cardigans right now. Also wearing pants that aren't jeans makes me feel a lot more put together. Like you, I need to branch out with my jewelry selection.

For tops, I tend to wear a lot of button shirts and polo shirts - but polos are still fairly casual right? When I was just out of college and switching from tshirts to polos I felt like I was dressing up, but now I feel like they're my casual and I need to step it up some more. I'm not the best at this, I'm trying to improve in this area too.

  • Everyone has already given you great ideas, but now that it's getting colder, you can also have a lot of fun with scarves as an accessory. Cardigans are definitely as easy way to step up an outfit a notch.

  • I had a big stack of v-neck ribbed pullovers from Eddie Bauer and JCrew to wear with dress slacks. Like this, but not that low: http://www.eddiebauer.com/catalog/product.jsp?ensembleId=40629
  • Sounds like you need a trip to F21 for some cute cheap jewelry. Seriously, the accessories make the outift.

We don't have a F21. Pensacola shopping sucks.

If you want, we can head to Destin at the beginning of December and go to F21.  I cant go before then.  We could go to the outlets out there too.

I wish you were off Sundays! Or I wish I was off Fridays. boo

  • I have 3 suits from JC Penney (Black skirt, blazer, and pants and a light grey Pants suit) and then some random patterned pants.  I also wear a lot of cardigans because I can push the blazer button as long as I have some sort or cardigan on.  It also lets me use a lot of camis and tank tops which is nice in the summer.

I have had a lot of good luck with JCPenney suits.  They can go in the washer and dryer and are a reasonable price, especially with all the sales they have.  My grey suit i've owned for 4 years and it still looks great.
