We have a mediation date

After almost six months, I have a mediation date.  Or, at least a choice of four.  I've chosen one, so now I'm waiting for confirmation.

While I am so ready to no longer be this man's wife (legally, at least), I am terrified at the thought of seeing him again.  I have no doubt he won't try anything during mediation, but it's what happens afterward that I'm wary of (especially if things don't go his way).

Thank God I'll be going home afterward...the next state over.

Re: We have a mediation date

  • I am glad you have a mediation date.  Do you have a support person to go with you? (friend, mom, dad)  I just worry because I know he is abusive.  I hope I am not overstepping my bounds.
  • No, you're not overstepping your bounds.  After I asked my boss for time off (I love that woman), a support person was the second thing I secured; my mom is coming with me.  I'll be driving in the night before, and staying with family a good hour away from mediation after it's all over.

It's odd.  I'm fine with my situation, and happy overall.  I'm building a life here, and I like where I'm at.  However, the thought of having to see him again, at all, stops me cold.

  • See if they can put you in separate rooms and maybe have someone from the mediation office walk you to your car (I went through this before so I know these are some options).  Good luck, I hope you get some resolutions that you need.

  • Thanks!  My lawyer has already demanded separate rooms (again, thank God). I will also request that I not leave until he has already left, and someone walk to me to my car.

Honestly, I'm not sure how much there is to mediate, unless my exhusband is just going to make things difficult (which he probably will).  I'm not asking for much, just half the proceeds from the sale of the house, my car, and for him to pay his own CC debt and student loans and allow me to make mine.  We have no children (thank God).

So far, he's wanted me to pay part of his CC debt, and I've told him no way in hell (um, he ran up $4k in spending in 2 months going on vacations he couldn't afford).  I think that will be the sticking point in this whole mess.

  • Good luck!  I know people who have had luck with mediation so hopefully I can add you to that list soon!
