rational thoughts needed (re: keeping "stuff")

So as most of you know, I'm hoping to move from TX to MI in the near-ish future.  Right now, I have a TON of stuff that's in storage in my garage that I'm trying to get rid of.  Most of it is easy to part with, but off the top of my head, I have two things that I need rational advice on:

1) I have a set of curio cabinets that my grandparents bought me when I was probably 5.  They're in great shape, but there not really my style anymore (light oak with brass handles...most of my funiture now is dark wood).  So I listed them on craigstlist, but now that I have a guy who is interested, I'm feeling all sentimental about them.  I think this is because my grandmother just passed in January.  Now, they're not the only things I have from her/them.  It's the only furniture, but I have jewelry and pictures (and a fridge!) and other things like that.  I haven't really used the cabinets in the last 2 years, and I kind of like having the dining room not feel so cluttered (I have a huge table and a sideboard).

2) Books.  I pink-puffy-heart books.  I probably have 5 boxes of nothing but books.  Many are still in boxes as I don't have enough bookcase space for them.  Should I try to purge before the move and hit up a used book store?

2a) Some of these books are textbooks from college.  I was a finance major, so I kept all of my accounting and finance textbooks.  I've been hanging on to them because in all honesty, I've forgotten most of the accounting stuff that I learned because I'm not using it at all in my current position.  Should I just let them go and get new (read:updated) books if I ever need to brush up on that stuff if I move to a different position?

Wow.  Sorry this got stupid long.  I just need the lovely ladies of SO to help me with some unbiased advice and tell me if I'm being a sentimental pack rat fool.  THANKS!!

  • 1- Get rid of it. I realize your grandmother gave it to you but you havent used it nor do you like it. Let someone else enjoy it!

    2-Hit the used bookstore!

3-Get rid of all you textbooks, and just buy new ones when you're ready to re-learn.

    Happy Selling Yes

  • I could have written this post almost exactly verbatim, minus moving to MI and being an accounting major.

My Mom just put her old house up for sale with a bunch oh my stuff in the attic along with a curio cabinet that my grandmother left me. Mom JUST called me yesterday and asked what I wanted her to do with the cabinet. I thought about it and since I do have other things Nana left me, I reluctantly told her to sell it.  I don't have room for it, it doesn't match ANYthing of mine and I would never use it.

As for the text books, I kept ALL my grad school text books and my book case is busting at the seams. I refer back to them all the time, but I am HUGE into fitness and my major was Fitness and Human Performance. Not to mention, I always have friends asking me about injuries and stuff. So, I can't part with them.

As for the regular books, I have slowly been going through them and keeping the ones that I think I will read again, or ones that I really enjoyed or ones that were signed by the authors.  The others, I am taking to Half Price Books. I figured if I ever want those books again, I can just go back to HPB and buy them for super cheap because it isn't worth hauling them everywhere.

  • 1) Sell it

    2) Sell or donate them.  Your life will feel better with less clutter around.  I also love books, but they are a PITA to move because they're so heavy.

    3) Get rid of the textbooks, except for reference manuals that you can easily use and not flip through 500 pages to get to info you need.

  • 1) I would take a photo of the cabinet - maybe from multiple angles, then get rid of it.  You'll still save the "memory," but you really don't need the cabinet to be reminded of your grandparents and their love for you.

    2) I love books, too, but I only keep a few.  I like to donate my books to booksales, then go to the booksales and buy some new titles.  If you are realistic, there are some books you might read over and over (for me, Jane Austin and other classics, some mommy books, etc.).

3). I might keep 2-3 textbooks, but really, you don't know where your life is going.  Most of the training you need will be on the job, and textbooks become outdated, anyway.  You can always buy used textbooks if you get a new job where you need that info, and I'm sure there are better sources of accounting and finance info than the textbooks you've used before.

  • Thanks ladies.  I think I knew all of these answers, I just needed to "hear" it from people.  I appreciate you all!!

  • Great...I mentioned to my mom that I was thinking about selling.  She said that she wants to think about it...that maybe one day I'll have a little girl and they can go in her room with the dolls that my grandmother bought for me to have in them (I still have all the dolls).  Now she has me feeling guilty again.  Why do moms have that power??

  • I missed your post about the move. Where in MI are you moving to?

I am all for getting rid of stuff that you don't use. I am getting ready to do the same thing so when I move to a new place I don't have to lug it all again.

I have a lot of colleagues that want to keep all their text books in the rare case they need to reference them again. I on the other hand, will most likely rely on google and the fact that my employer has most reference material anyway. I would rather have the extra space.
