Fully Support the Decisions to Fire

Thankfully, the Penn State Board of Trustees did the right thing.

I think all of the students who are rioting in favor of their "beloved" coach need to read the Grand Jury report.  What a bunch of naive kids who are getting caught up with the media attention.

And Joe Pa's off-handed comment last night telling the students to "pray a little for the victims" makes me sick.

Re: Fully Support the Decisions to Fire

  • I thought the same thing.  These young kids aren't thinking clearly.

What are you takes on the issue of whether the graduate assistant should be fired? He is now a coach on the team.

Absolutly! He should have gone to the police.

If they fire, what message does that send?

    KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!

    yeah... not a good message.

I've reported things and have trusted that it would be addressed. I haven't followed up. Am I getting fired now?

on another note,  I do want to echo E's comments yesterday that I cannot handle the "fans" correlating this situation with winning a football game against them this weekend.  I'm sorry but STFU. The situation is AWFUL, why would you brag about this helping Nebraska win a game, lame, people.

That is why a statute like ours would be good in this situation.  You have to turn it into the hotline. Telling your dad or boss, not good enough.   They were trying to self govern themselves and deal with things internally when it should have been turned into the proper authorities.   I think being fired for breaking the law is a valid reason.

  • I think the Grad Assistant, now coach, should also be fired.  The Board of Trustees needs to set the tone of zero tolerance.

I thought the AD was already fired? No?

Nancy, did the situation you reported rise to this level? What action was taken? Do you feel that you have an obligation to follow-up? Why or why not? Are you in a position of power, such as the individuals at Penn State?

  • Granted when I was a teacher (10 years ago) and did this training.   It was my understanding that if I made a report, I was to do it to the principal.  Then the principal would turn it in with me sitting right there.   If I did turn it into my boss, I would ask for some documentation knowing it was turned in since I am on the line if it does not get turned in.

One would assume if someone was caught having anal sex with a young boy, they would get arrested.   You can't tell me that graduate assistant didn't think it was odd the police never interviewed him.

  • A situation of this magnitude SHOULD be followed up on.

Hi, Graduate Assistant...you walked in on a grown man anally raping a young boy...and you didn't feel compelled to make sure that man was brought to justice?!

How in the world is this so hard to understand?!

Turning the other cheek, and doing just enough to cover your arse ISN'T enough.  If that was your child in the shower, I'm pretty sure you'd want that GA to be screaming from the rooftops until someone pays for it.

    Ditto this.

L-- I thought I heard last night that he wasn't fired yet.  I was in a phenergan delerium though, I may have not heard right, ha.

  • I'm glad they did the right thing. It sucks that JoePa is going out this way after all these years, but dude, you did it to yourself - you should know better.

All of them should know better. They wanted to protect their precious image - when in fact, they could have been heroes and turned that savage in - saying "this will NOT be tolerated on our campus, end of story" - would have been a week press, and thats it.

    Now look what happened.

Also, can you IMAGINE the shitt talking between the players at hte game this saturday on the line? "whats up buttfvckers, I'm going to smash you"

  • Completely and totally support him being fired. I haven't read enough into the story to know if the reporting stopped at the AD or if he told anyone else, but I find it very hard to believe that in a cover up like this that members of the board had no clue (odds are we'll never know just how deep it went). There are quite a few more heads that need to roll imo.

As far as the rioting, I think it's probably a lot like most college sport related riots. Most of them probably didn't even have a reason to be out there, they were just out there to be part of it and be idiots. I find it really hard to believe that they all support what was done. If I were a student at Penn State right now, I'd be completely embarrassed by my school.

You KNOW thats what they will be saying - to get in their heads and mess them up a little. Those poor players staff has tarnished their image to no end. They will be sorta labeled as the "peepee toucher school". At least thats what I think when I see or hear of Penn state - instantly I think "creepers".

Agree.  And the students rioting...a colossal display of thuggery.
  • The rioting is riduclous.  Seriously, young people don't get fired up about legitimate things but they will stand outside a football coach's house?! Come on.

Exactly. My district has changed things this year -- instead of going to our principal, we call CPS directly, and THEN tell our principal that we called, but we don't tell them anything about it. The reasoning is: the fewer people in contact with the child before the authorities can investigate, the better. But, because *I* am the one calling, I KNOW that I've reported and it's taken care of.

But, if I were to SEE something and wasn't questioned about it or didn't actually see them get arrested - especially this magnitude - I would be knocking doors down to make sure that the right authorities knew about it!

  • What I can't get past is all the ADULTS knowing all this for over 10 years who did nothing. If I took it to a higher up and wasn't followed up onYou bet your tail I would follow up on it myself. I probably wouldn't take it to my higher ups I would take it to officials myself in thefirst place. Knowing this for 10 years would haunt me alone! Just readingthat trail makes me furious and I have no connections.

I agree completely. I think they are driven by the sensationalism of it all. But the fact is, they ARE adults, so they SHOULD get better informed and represent themselves accordingly. They should also think about the longer-term consequences. Yes, this may be all fun and games, hey watch me roll over a tv van, now, but getting into grad school, getting a job, etc down the road - they need to think about that when determining whether to support a cause and put themselves out there on FB, the internet, in the news.

Not to mention that the grad assistant walked into a shower and SAW HIM raping a boy against the shower wall. He should have punched that guy, grabbed the boy, and ran out of there while calling the cops on his cell phone - not go home daddy and ask him what he should do - I guarentee they didnt want to ruin this grads chances of getting a coaching job, so thats why they went to Pa.

    Sick. Gross. Heinous.

I'm not sure how far anything went with any of the reports that I have made.

In one case I was pretty certain a child was being physically abused - more than just being spanked. Something the child said to me when I let her know that I was going to be calling home made me believe that instead of the family talking to her about her behavior they hurt her. I quit calling and immediately went to my principal. The social worker came and spoke with the girl later that day. I don't know what became of it. She never said anything else. I was never asked any more questions and I never called home again.

What would you do? I can't call CPS and ask. Pretty sure that's a privacy issue, isn't it?

I don't feel like I had an obligation to follow up because I didn't know for certain that anything was even happening. I just got a weird feeling from what she told me. The rule is, if it makes you wonder, report it. It's not my job to decide if something is going on or not. That's why I report it and someone else investigates.

What would you have done in my situation, privacy restrictions taken into consideration?

  • 28-711. Child subjected to abuse or neglect; report; contents; toll-free number.

    (1) When any physician, medical institution, nurse, school employee, social worker, or other person has reasonable cause to believe that a child has been subjected to child abuse or neglect or observes such child being subjected to conditions or circumstances which reasonably would result in child abuse or neglect, he or she shall report such incident or cause a report of child abuse or neglect to be made to the proper law enforcement agency or to the department on the toll-free number established by subsection (2) of this section. Such report may be made orally by telephone with the caller giving his or her name and address, shall be followed by a written report, and to the extent available shall contain the address and age of the abused or neglected child, the address of the person or persons having custody of the abused or neglected child, the nature and extent of the child abuse or neglect or the conditions and circumstances which would reasonably result in such child abuse or neglect, any evidence of previous child abuse or neglect including the nature and extent, and any other information which in the opinion of the person may be helpful in establishing the cause of such child abuse or neglect and the identity of the perpetrator or perpetrators. Law enforcement agencies receiving any reports of child abuse or neglect under this subsection shall notify the department pursuant to section 28-718 on the next working day by telephone or mail.

    (2) The department shall establish a statewide toll-free number to be used by any person any hour of the day or night, any day of the week, to make reports of child abuse or neglect. Reports of child abuse or neglect not previously made to or by a law enforcement agency shall be made immediately to such agency by the department.

  • I would figure out what the district / school policy is on this issue.  It should be aligned with our state statute.  I like the idea of it being called in with you present.

The one time I did it, I left my name and number as a cya thing.   Did I feel good about it?  No.  Was I 100% sure what was going on?  No. It isn't my job to investigate... I had reasonable suspicion and acted on it. I put it into the hands of the proper authority.

You (like my daycare friend) are vulnerable in these situations and need to protect yourself.

  • Nancy, Your situation is/was different than this one.  You did the right thing and you know that.  This one was a definite emergency situation and should've been dealt with accordingly/immediately.

This.  Nancy suspected something *could* be happening.  The GA SAW a boy being raped.

Again, completely different situations that should be handled differently.

Nancy, in your situation...I probably would have followed up with the principal.  I would have wanted to know if anything came of my report.  Maybe the principal would have said, "You know, I can't tell you anything...sorry" but I would have at least tried.  That's just the way I am.
