Penn State University

Have you been following this horrible story? It just makes me so sick and sad. I really cant believe it

And now the students at PSU are rioting because the coach was fired. Indifferent

I just feel so bad for those victims and I am sure there are more then we know of.

Re: Penn State University

  • I just read about it today.  It's sickening.  He deserved to be fired.  I haven't heard the rioting part yet. That's asinine.
  • I'm not sure what's happening, other than the rioting by students and that lots of people think that's dumb and child abuse.

Can someone sum it up in a sentence or two ?

  • Anyone that feels bad for Paterno disgusts me.
  • I haven't been following it super close but this is what I've caught so far:

Assistant Coach is a community volunteer who uses his power of good for evil - molests a bunch of kids.  Somehow Head Coach (Paterno) knows but doesn't tell on Assistant Coach.  *** hits the fan, they both go down for it because Assistant Coach is a horrible person and Paterno knew but didn't do anything about it.

  • Here is an even better summary:

A grand jury indictment, harrowing to read, asserts that Mr Sandusky sexually assaulted eight young boys from his own foundation over 15 years on as many as 40 occasions, several times in the very locker rooms of the Penn State team. He was allegedly caught in the act by a graduate assistant in 2002 who told Mr Paterno about it the next day, who, in turn, reported it up the university chain of command but apparently took it no further.

Nobody at the university informed law enforcement of the alleged crimes, nobody reached out to the families of the boys, some not 10 years old, and Mr Sandusky, who had already retired, remained very much part of the local football community, with free run of the team?s facilities.

For nine years, possibly even longer, the Penn State cover-up worked. But the dam has now burst. On Wednesday night the university summarily fired Mr Paterno and Graham Spanier, its long-serving president. Others in the academic chain of command have been suspended and indicted for perjury by the grand jury.

  • Wow. I'm speechless.

I can't believe what a huge cover-up it was and that not one single adult in the situation thought it would be a good idea to help those poor boys. Imagine how many children could have been spared being molested if someone had spoken up.

    It's disgusting.

  • I'm also speechless.

Working with Penn State in the past in a travel-related capacity, they are so cautious and careful of things that I'm surprised they did nothing about this until the world found out.

Disgusting and disappointing and the student's who are reacting in support of the head coach... wow.

  • I know it's about so much more than this, but I wish someone would realize that this is what happens when colleges become more about sports and money instead of an education.

The university and now the students all had/have the wrong priorities and it is pretty sick.

    very true.

  • A girl I used to know from a former team of ours posted a fb status saying something to the effect of 'how many people see or know of something in their life that is wrong but don't do anything about it? coach paterno is getting screwed.'

I was almsot speechless...but not quite. A few peopel had commented 'Amen!' or other supportive messages. I wrote a few lines and then a tumbleweed rolled through.

  • I'm so beyond disgusted with the whole thing.  How does a person witness a child being raped and do NOTHING!? Why is Paterno being treated like a hero?  Why does McQueary get to stand on the sidelines at the game this weekend???
  • I am so horrified by this on every level. My FIL was one of the game doctor's for Penn State games for years so he knows all the people involved, it's just totally surreal. This is just so depressing.

I would love to see what you wrote because you always write things with the exact words people need to hear.

I am just so floored by the whole thing.

  • I'm so saddened by the entire thing. How is it possible that Sandusky was able to get away with all of this, when so many people knew his true character? Someone on another board had this comment when some dumba$$ said they felt sorry for JoePa...child rape is not a workplace matter. It's so true. I don't get how so many people thought well I told the boss and that's okay. Apparently the number of boys he sexually abused is in the teens.

This is what I can't wrap my mind around.  Penn State is supposed to be one of the better schools in the country, producing leaders of tomorrow, blah blah blah yet their students aren't shocked/horrified/angry that one of their own would do something so terrible, they are shocked/horrified/angry that someone who knew about the terrible things AND DID NOTHING got fired.

Yes, it is unfortunate that Paterno had this great legacy as a football coach and now (hopefully) it's tarnished but if he was so concerned about it he should have done more back in 2002 that way he would be remembered for being a winning coach and a guy who stopped a perv..not the guy who got fired for ignoring one.

What a compliment frlcb! I don't know exactly what I wrote because when I went back to her page to cut and paste for you, I see she deleted the post. Weird, maybe making light of child rape for the sake of the reputation of a 'legendary' coach of college football wasn't something she ended up being proud of?

I have been following this more and more closely as yesterday/today have gone on, not because I give a rats about college football or Joe Paterno or any of it, but because I am truly shocked by how MANY people know some or all of the allegations/witness account and did NOTHING besides have some boys club chit chat about it in an office on Penn State's campus somewhere.

Those who are boo-hooing over the particular attention being paid to Joe Paterno in this whole situation have their priorities seriously screwed up. Of course there are others shoudl should be (and are being) held accountable to varying degrees (from investigation to dismissal to possible charges being filed) but he is a public face, celebrity name on what the university PUSHES as the face of the school in many ways and a large player in the collegiate athletic scene. You cannot expect to have celebrity when you are being celebrated but be protected from infamy when you are involved in a moral crime of this nature. Ridiculous.

I completely agree. I couldn't care less about football, especially college football, but the lengths this school has gone to in order to protect their football program is disgusting.
