Quick Therapy related question

So I am trying to find a therapist for myself. I know it is important that I go and I would like to get started as soon as possible.

Last week I found three names of therapists close to home who specialize in marital issues. I realized that 1 is not covered by my insurance. The 2nd one I called Monday and have not heard back from her. In my opinion that either means a. she is not accepting new patients or b. she is not good at returning phone calls, either way I am moving on. The third I called today and she just got back to me a little while ago but unfortunately is not accepting new patients at this time. Which is totally fine and understandable.

If I do the "find a doc" search through my insurance it gives me hundreds of names of therapists who are covered (even within 5 miles from my house). Unfortunately it does not list anything other than their degree and contact information. If I google search I can find what they specialize in. But it seems like there has to be an easier way?

How did you find your therapist? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Re: Quick Therapy related question

  • Maybe try the reverse? Google search a list of doc's on a site that shows everything you're looking for then back track to the insurance company?
  • I was given a list of names from my insurance company and did my own research on them. I ended up not clicking with my therapist and only had 3 sessions. But, by that point I had already made enough progress to clear my head..as odd as that might sound.

  • I think there is a Marriage and Family Therapy Association.  Maybe there website lists providers by city or state.
  • It depends what you want to get out of therapy.  I called around and specifically asked 1) if they were accepting new patients and 2) if they have a background in substance abuse counseling and 3) if they have night hours.

Maybe you can cross reference some names with a Marriage and Family Therapy Assn like julie suggested so you can find providers who have a background dealing with family dynamics, although I think a lot would already.  I just kept calling until I got calls back and then tried a few therapists until I found one who was a good match for me.  Good luck!

  • My gyno gave me three recommendations after I sobbed uncontrollably during my appointment to get tested for STDS (which were all neg - yahooo!!).

All were on my insurance plan.  I picked the one that my gyno said to start with, and also since she sees children (but only from age 6+) as I have two boys (4 and 6) the others were all for teenagers+
