I have a few FB friends that went to Penn State and every.single.one is defending Jo Pa and claiming how unfair it is that the university is using him as a scapegoat. And these people are parents, mother and fathers to young children. It's disgusting, and I'm >< this close to defriending them. Seriously this guy was the most powerful figure at that school, a legend. I have heard time and time again how he even wielded more power than the school president, after hearing these allegations from various sources did he think it was ok to go to the athletic director, and then just drop it?!
I just want to go off on them. How would you feel if your child came to you telling you they had been a victim and then to find out the most powerful man at that school, with some serious clout in the community as well, just did the bare minimum? sure, he might have done what he was legally responsible for, and he is a legand at the school and has done great things there, but that doesn't make his actions any less morally reprehensible. He knew the police never looked into it, he knew this was continual, and he did nothing. I can't even imagine those parents that thought their kids were safe, or those children, those poor poor children. And with the new rumor coming out it makes me even more sick. How do you ever defend his inaction???
Ok, done my rant
Re: FB is making me mad!
At the same time you posted that I posted this on the thread I started:
"I'm tired of people implying that because we're sad about the events and sad about the end of paterno's career that it means we support child abuse or covering up child abuse."
To us, it's the fall of a legend. To some (not me, but some), it's as if you found out that your father or grandfather did this.
And for the record, while I do think Paterno is culpable, I do this he has been the easiest scapegoat for the media go to after and he has been overly blamed for this.

Not trying to argue with you. I agree with you.
There's lots of things I wish were different about this situation.

Sad, disappointed is OK, undestandable. Rioting? ridiculous and embarrasing. As I wrote on somebody's FB this morning, any teacher, educator, coach's FIRST duty is to protect children - whether they are 9 or 19, and Joe Pa clearly failed that test. No, he didn't rape anybody himself, but he didn't PROTECT these from somebody who was preying on them.
JoePa protected and enabled a monster.
There were at least 2 reported incidents of abuse (including SODOMY of a 10 yr old boy) on campus in FB facilities.
It's indefensible. What happened is disgusting and ANYONE who allowed it to continue to happen should be punished.
As a mother and an NCAA sportsfan I am sickened.
If this isn't a case of lack of institutional control, then I don't know what is. PSU Football should get the death penalty SMU style. Period.
team Daisy.
Joe Paterno is getting blamed honestly because he should be blamed. At the bare minimum he knew this guy was doing something to young boys in PSU facilities. He waited a day (in 2002) and then called the AD. On what planet does he think that was enough?!?
Tony Dungy had a really good piece on this where basically he's saying that where child abuse is concerned, you don't trust other people to handle it. That's not enough. And that's why people are so angry at Paterno. Arguably the most influential man on that campus - and he passed the buck at one of the most important moments. That's why people are upset. That's why people such as myself have no sympathy for him.
I do think that people are confusing "blaming Paterno" with not blaming anyone else. I can and do blame lots of people - obviously sandusky, curley, schultz, and so on down the line. Paterno gets part of it. he deserves part of it. He's not a scapegoat. He played a part in this.
